In this weekly post, I share with you my most interesting discoveries of the week, including the latest news on the fronts of fitness, nutrition, health, wellness, biohacking, and anti-aging research. One of the most persistent debates in fitness nutrition has been whether you should slam a protein shake before your workout or immediately afterward to maximize your gains.
For years, the so-called “anabolic window” was treated like gospel—miss it, and you’d supposedly leave muscle on the table.
Researchers compared the effects of protein supplementation before vs. after resistance training on both muscle strength and lean mass in men and women.
No significant differences were found between the two strategies.
In other words, whether you take protein before or after resistance training, the outcome is the same: both strategies are effective for building strength and muscle mass.
This reinforces what many nutrition experts have been suggesting in recent years: it’s not the timing that matters most, but rather your total daily protein intake.
If you consistently hit your protein goals—typically in the range of 1.4–2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight—you’re covering your bases for performance and recovery.
The key takeaway? Don’t stress about sprinting to the blender after your last rep. If you like your shake before training, go for it. If afterward fits better, that works too. The science shows your muscles will benefit either way.

This Week in Health & Performance: What the Latest Research Says
🚬 Cannabis & Heart Health: A meta-analysis of 24 observational studies found cannabis use was linked to higher cardiovascular risk, especially when inhaled. Notably, many participants also smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol (and probably ate Cheetos, too), which likely compounded the risk (study here).
🍊 Juice vs. Whole Fruit for Blood Sugar: In a randomized trial with type 2 diabetics, blood glucose and insulin responses were no different between drinking orange juice and eating whole oranges. Caveat: this was a short study and didn’t track gut health or long-term outcomes (full study here).
🏋️ Fasted Training Myth? New evidence suggests that resistance training fasted may not be ideal for muscle growth, though this study looked at untrained adults who usually gain muscle regardless of diet. For serious lifters, fed training likely has advantages (read the study).
⏳ Anti-Aging Compounds That Actually Work?: Out of 36 compounds tested across mammals and non-mammals, only 8 consistently extended mammalian lifespan: curcumin, spermidine, epithalamin, D-glucosamine, estradiol, simvastatin, SKQ, and taurine (read more here).
Key Takeaway: Not all diet hacks or supplements are created equal. While cannabis and fasting workouts may come with hidden risks, certain simple compounds (like taurine or curcumin) are showing real promise for longevity.
