Abbott Elementary‘s executive producer recently released some interesting information about season 5, and it could very well be setting up an important character exiting the show. Abbott Elementary became an instant classic when it premiered in 2021, and fans have become attached to the characters over the past four seasons.
However, despite the show’s and the actors’ popularity, it’s possible some actors will depart before the show’s end. Quinta Brunson has said she’s looking forward to moving on from Abbott Elementary and playing roles other than Janine in the future, although ABC executive Craig Erwich said her comments were misconstrued and there are no plans to end the show.
Even if Janine remains a main character to the end, there’s no guarantee the other teachers will. Thus, the Abbott Elementary season 5 changes may be setting up an opportunity to create the perfect opening for certain characters to leave the show.
Abbott Elementary Season 5 Will Introduce New Teachers
Abbott Elementary season 5 will be introducing some new characters, although it’s not yet clear if these will be new series regulars or simply guest stars. The executive producer of the show, Patrick Schumacker, recently told TV Line that in Abbott Elementary season 5, a group of new teachers will join the faculty.
The new additions to the school are sure to cause tension among the original main characters. Regarding how Janine will feel about the fresh blood, Schumacker said the following:
“She starts to kind of question, when younger teachers come in, what her role is, now that she is not the spring chicken she once was.”
Luckily, Janine will have someone to lean on. Schumacker confirmed that Janine and Gregory are still dating at the start of season 5. Ava and O’Shon are also dating this season, although the relationship won’t change who Ava is as a person. However, there’s another character that could retire at some point during Abbott Elementary’s run.
Introducing New Teachers Inches Barbara Towards Retirement
If Janine feels lost with the introduction of new, younger teachers, we can only imagine how Barbara feels. The kindergarten teacher has already hinted about being done multiple times through the first four seasons, and Abbott Elementary season 4 set up a potential retirement for Barbara. If the new teachers cause her to feel outdated or unnecessary, she may take the chance to leave teaching for good.
That being said, it feels a little soon for the show to retire its Emmy-winning actress and fan-favorite character just yet. Hopefully, the new teachers are just a speed bump rather than a roadblock. Barbara is a huge part of Abbott Elementary, and it would be a shame to see her go.
