Hi, and welcome to Friday Statwatch, which is part potpourri, part scavenger hunt when it comes to American scholastic field hockey numbers. We try to pull together a good set of lists every week for your enjoyment.
This week’s notable statistical occurrence is the fact that, on Sept 25, Yorktown Tabb (Va.) won its 100th consecutive field hockey game, becoming the second team to breach that mark this year. The other team that has done the same this year is Watertown (Mass.), which won its 100th straight on September 9th.
Tabb and Watertown have a number of remarkable parallels; they are mid-sized schools in their respective states, and are pretty “mid” in terms of their enrollment. Watertown has about 761 students according to official figures, Tabb tips out at 1130.
Each school has its share of Division I alumnae, and both schools’ coaches have been elected to the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame. Tabb’s Wendy Wilson will join Watertown’s Eileen Donahue in the Hall this coming January.
Oh, and, lest we forget, both teams currently hold state championships. Watertown has 22 championships, and Tabb has 12.
One other parallel for both of these powerful programs is the fact that, in their recent histories, they have played such good hockey, it would not allow even one goal to an opponent for long periods of time. Watertown has spun shutout streaks of 41 and 30 games, and Tabb has a 27-game shutout streak to its credit. As of the end of play on Wednesday, Tabb has a nine-game shutout skein. Business as usual for the Tigers, I guess.
