King Charles III has formally removed the HRH and Prince of his
younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
The London Gazette has published the notification stating that
Andrew no longer holds the ”style, title or attribute” which he had
had since his birth in 1960.
The complete notice reads ”The King
has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the
Realm, dated 3 November 2025, to declare that Andrew Mountbatten
Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style,
title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of
‘Prince’.”
Although the Letters Patent were dated November 3, the notice
was only published on November 5.
Buckingham Palace announced on October 30 2025 that King Charles
would begin proceedings to remove the HRH and Prince from his
brother who would henceforth be known as Andrew Mountbatten
Windsor.
The King also began proceedings to have the title of Duke of
York removed from the Roll of the Peerage.
This, too, has now happened with the London Gazette publishing
another notice on November 5 2025 which read ”The King has been
pleased by Warrant under His Royal Sign Manual dated 30 October
2025 to direct His Secretary of State to cause the Duke of York to
be removed from the Roll of the Peerage with immediate effect.”
Andrew
Mountbatten Windsor had been made Duke of York by Queen
Elizabeth II in July 1986 when he married Sarah Ferguson. In early
October 2025, he announced he would no longer use the title after
further controversy over his relationship with convicted
paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019.
However, Andrew’s announcement caused further anger when it was
confirmed that he still held the title and had just chosen not to
use it any more.
There was fresh debate after it was revealed that he paid no
monetary rent on his home at Royal Lodge, a thirty room residence
on the Windsor estate that had previously been lived in by Queen
Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
As it was announced that The King was removing Andrew’s titles,
Buckingham Palace also confirmed that the lease on Royal Lodge had
been surrendered and that Mr Mountbatten Windsor would be
moving.
It’s now understood that his new home will be a private
residence on the Sandringham estate which is owned personally by
King Charles rather than being part of the Crown Estate, as is the
case with Royal Lodge.
Andrew Mountbatten Windsor was automatically an HRH and Prince
from birth under the 1917 Letters Patent issued by King George V
which stated that all the children of a Monarch and all the
grandchildren of a Monarch in the male line were entitled to be HRH
and Prince or Princess.
For that reason, Andrew’s two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie,
retain their titles as they are the children of the son of a
Monarch.
