Daniele De Rossi and Paolo Vanoli both debut with a 2-2 draw, as Genoa and Fiorentina fought out a thrilling stalemate, including David De Gea penalty save.
This was a curious coincidence, as both clubs appointed new coaches this week. The hosts sacked Patrick Vieira after three draws and six defeats, with caretaker manager Domenico Criscito overseeing a 2-1 victory away to Sassuolo. The Viola fired Stefano Pioli on Tuesday, with Daniele Galloppa at the helm for Thursday’s stoppage-time Conference League defeat at Mainz. Moise Kean sustained a bruised tibia in that match and was ruled out here along with Robin Gosens, Tariq Lamptey and Christian Kouame. Ruslan Malinovskyi was suspended for the Grifone.

Genoa took the lead when Aaron Martin floated a long free kick over the top, as Fiorentina’s defence got it all wrong, allowing Leo Ostigard a free header from six yards.
The Tuscans responded, as Roberto Piccoli saw his attempted tap-in deflected, and on the resulting corner Lorenzo Colombo clumsily handled. Gudmundsson stepped up amid loud jeers to convert the penalty against his former club, firing it into the top corner.
Rolando Mandragora at full stretch couldn’t get control of a dangerous Niccolò Fortini cross from the left, allowing Nicola Leali to smother.
Alessandro Marcandalli only steered his header into the arms of David De Gea on a Martin cross.
Straight after the restart, Martin pumped another free kick into the box and Ranieri got it very wrong, failing to kick the ball, so it ricocheted up onto his arm. Colombo stepped up and saw his penalty palmed off the line by De Gea.
It proved costly, as Fiorentina turned the game around soon after when Gudmundsson won a tackle in midfield and Simon Sohm threaded through for Piccoli to beat Leali one-on-one. This was the striker’s first Serie A goal of the season in the Viola jersey.
Genoa replied immediately, with another Martin free kick sparking a mad scramble, culminating in Colombo managing to sweep in while on the ground from 10 yards.
Piccoli nearly restored the Fiorentina advantage with a spectacular turn and strike from a tricky angle, denied only by a tough Leali save.
De Gea had to make a desperate one-handed save in stoppages, as Patrizio Masini had hit the half-volley on the turn to almost surprise the veteran goalkeeper.
