LaNorris Sellers, who vaulted into the spotlight as the South Carolina Gamecocks’ starting quarterback, has endured a difficult follow-up season marked by fewer completions and diminished impact as a dual-threat playmaker. South Carolina’s offense has not clicked as it did last year, and the struggles have contributed to a disappointing 3-6 record, leaving them near the bottom of the SEC standings.

Could LaNorris Sellers Enter the Transfer Portal?
Despite a tough season, Sellers remains an intriguing NFL prospect. Yet draft analysts, including Todd McShay, believe remaining in college could better prepare him for the pro ranks. McShay explained on his show last week:
“There’s a strong opinion in NFL scouting circles,” Todd McShay said. “He will be back in school next year. That he absolutely needs to for his development to be ready when called upon as a first-round draft pick… Everyone is supporting the concept that he needs another year of college. There are people in his camp that are in agreement, from what I’m told.”

If Sellers does elect to switch schools, McShay thinks Miami could be a natural fit:
“I’m not here to say there’s collusion,” McShay said. “I promise you, no one said a word. But one person started putting the dots together. There is a place in South Florida where they’ve done a really nice job of hand-picking quarterbacks the last two years, and they’ve seen ascensions in their game… Miami is a program I would be very cautious of if I’m Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks program of trying to come in with an offer that’s very difficult to refuse.”
Miami’s track record with transfer quarterbacks is a blueprint for success. Last year, Cam Ward made headlines by rising to the top pick in the NFL draft after a breakout transfer season. This year, Carson Beck arrived from Georgia and rejuvenated his draft profile after a downturn, a resurgence that could entice Sellers to follow a similar path if he enters the transfer portal.
Sellers’ NFL Draft Potential
After Week 11, PFSN’s NFL Draft analyst Ian Cummings put together his most recent updated scouting report on Sellers. Like McShay, Cummings urged Sellers to consider a return to school and a look at the transfer portal.
“Sellers was a projected sleeper for the first overall pick entering the 2025 campaign, and it’s no secret why. At 6’3″, 242 pounds, with hyper-elite athleticism, evasive and creative flair, and wicked arm strength and velocity generation, his raw tools are second to none. But while fellow SEC signal caller Ty Simpson is climbing up the board, Sellers is falling, and could ultimately be best served to return to school and perhaps test the transfer portal,” Cummings wrote.

“It was more of the same for Sellers in Week 10 against Ole Miss. The Gamecocks’ signal caller flashed his tantalizing raw talent with a few nice runs and a pinpoint deep touchdown to Nyckoles Harbor, but his pocket operation remained all too inconsistent. There were glimpses of good navigation within fluctuating space, but Sellers found himself missing reads and holding the ball, oscillating between under-throws and over-throws, and failing to attain any semblance of operational consistency.
Later in the game, when he had to press to try and make up a 16-point deficit, he threw two INTs, one of which could be attributed to his lack of vision and poor precision. Sellers’ raw talent can’t be forgotten amidst this adversity, but the prevailing conclusion for his evaluation and 2026 NFL Draft stock remains the same: He should return to school and transfer in 2026.”
