Pokémon games always shine the spotlight on Legendary Pokémon, oftentimes the creature(s) central to the story or featured to market the Generation they’re in. As such, most Legendaries are iconic, powerful, and used in many trainers’ teams to decimate their competition. However, some Pokémon still classify as Legendary, but are rarely seen compared to others that attract the most attention.
Over multiple Generations, each Pokémon game has had a roster of both Legendary and Mythical Pokémon that players can find. Some are fairly easy, appearing in the wild after you progress to a certain point in the story. Others are far harder to find, requiring you to complete complex steps to battle them, and therefore rarely seen on a standard playthrough.
Regigigas
King Of Golems With Glaring Disadvantages
While Regigigas is a well-known Legendary, it is hardly ever used by players in any game it is in. This is for a variety of reasons, including how difficult it is to obtain, since players typically need to have Regirock, Regice, and Registeel in their party to activate Regigigas and engage it in battle. Considering how hard each of the Regi Pokémon are to capture already, getting Regigigas is a Herculean task.
Even if you do somehow obtain Regigigas, the Normal-type Legendary has one of the worst abilities in any Pokémon game — Slow Start. For five turns, Regigigas’ stats are halved, preventing it from being as strong of a fighter as other Legendary Pokémon it debuted with, such as Giratina, Dialga, and Palkia. As such, you hardly see anyone talking about this Pokémon beyond its design, which is incredibly unique along with all the Regis.
Deoxys
Mythical Space Being With Multiple Forms
Deoxys is another iconic Pokémon, but beyond one of the series’ movies and the endgame battle against it in Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, it’s rare to see discussions about it. Even the most veteran players may not know how many forms Deoxys can transform into, amplifying its abilities in a variety of ways. Deoxys is special in that regard, having each of these forms:
- Normal Form
- Attack Form
- Defense Form
- Speed Form
Once again, the rarity of Deoxys puts it out of many conversations. Usually only obtained through special events or deep into a title’s endgame, Deoxys is often overshadowed by Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza in the games where it originated. Considering how iconic those Legendary Pokémon are, Deoxys can easily be forgotten as a truly distinct Psychic-type with far more variety than some other Legendary creatures seen throughout the franchise.
Volcanion
Another Event Legendary With An Incredibly Rare Typing
Fire/Water-type Pokémon are almost non-existent, but Volcanion brought this rare typing combination to Gen 6 when it appeared. This Legendary is almost seldom heard about next to Xerneas, Yveltal, or Zygarde, who are all poster Pokémon for their own games. With Zygarde’s presence in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Volcanion is even more of an afterthought to even dedicated fans.
Volcanion only appeared twice in the west during two exclusive events for Pokémon X and Y, as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. As such, it is one of the rarest Pokémon ever made, existing as a Mythical that has not really shown up since it debuted.
The limited availability of Volcanion made it hard for trainers to get it, leading it to fade into obscurity as new Generations came and went. However, in 2025, Volcanion became featured in a Pokémon GO event, putting the Legendary back in some conversations that it didn’t get before.
Enamorus
Odd One Out Of Another Trilogy Of Legends
Throughout the competitive history of Pokémon games, Tornadus, Landorus, and sometimes Thundurus have been incredibly strong at high levels. This has always put them in recognition by players who revel in Pokémon battles, but Enamorus is a weird dark horse in the weather-based trilogy from the Gen 5 games. This Legendary didn’t appear until Pokémon Legends: Arceus, contributing partially to its lack of accolades.
This Fairy/Flying-type sometimes feels out of place compared to its relatives, existing only in the distant past of the Hisui region. Even though it breaks the similar design look of the other cloud-riding Legendary Pokémon, even its Incarnate form doesn’t garner much attention. Given how many Fairy-type Pokémon get overlooked by others, like Gardevoir, Blissey, and Clefable, it’s easy to see how Enamorus might not stand out.
Cresselia
Roaming Legendary That Is Outshined By Its Shadow
Cresselia is almost a poster example of a Legendary Pokémon that gets ignored, especially given its counterpart — Darkrai. Darkrai holds a very special place for many players, with a striking design and a focus on putting rival Pokémon to sleep with a unique battling style. As a result of Darkrai’s popularity, though, Cresselia’s multiple game appearances hardly matter as they are rarely recognized.
The Psychic-type Cresselia feels underwhelming compared to Darkrai in some cases, but the Pokémon has a variety of merits. Restorative moves and a crescent moon design do paint a compelling picture, but against Gen 4’s incredible array of Legendary Pokémon, Cresselia tends to fall short.
Zarude
Physical Fighter Locked Behind Limited-Time Action
The only Mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield is Zarude, a Grass/Dark-type creature you are unlikely to have heard of since 2019 or 2020. Much like Volcanion, Zarude was only obtainable through a limited-time event, making it impossible for players to capture it today. As you might expect, this has reduced any mention of the Legendary, almost causing it to get lost to time.
Tera Raids in Scarlet or Violet were common ways of getting a Zarude too, but unless you’re playing Pokémon GO, the lack of updates from the Gen 8 games now will cause the Legendary to almost never show up again.
Zarude also came out in a game whose DLC and base game Legendary creatures received far more focus. Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus made up a crucial part of Sword and Shield‘s story, while the DLC gave Calyrex, Glastrier, and Spectrier prominent roles as well. With the highly anticipated new Regis with Regieleki and Regidrago in the mix too for DLC, Zarude was simply not the most interesting Legendary around.
Celebi
Time Traveling Legendary Almost No One Has Used
Celebi is a Pokémon many fans of the franchise may recognize from one of the earlier anime movies, but almost no trainer has ever actually put the Legendary on their team. This Psychic/Grass-type has always been an enigma, similar to Mew or Jirachi from other earlier Generations. However, Celebi feels like the rarest of these rumored Mythical Pokémon, somewhat fitting with its role as a time traveler.
The mystique around Celebi has made it near impossible to catch, from Pokémon Gold and Silver to the Heartgold and Soulsilver remakes. Celebi has almost no appearances to capture it in any game, preventing players from becoming familiar with it like other Legendary creatures. Without as much notoriety as other Mythical Pokémon, Celebi is barely mentioned for any reason.
Silvally
Alolan Gift With Few Memorable Qualities
For once, Silvally is a Legendary that isn’t forgotten because it’s hard to get, as you can receive the pre-evolution form of this Pokémon quickly. The moment you beat the main story in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Sword, or Shield, you get Null, a Pokémon who evolves through friendship into Silvally. That being said, Silvally’s appearance isn’t anything special as a Normal-type Legendary that doesn’t have impressive features.
While the idea of a chimera Pokémon is interesting, Silvally is not a creature many trainers work to get when another Legendary can be a striking member of a team. Having to put in work to evolve a Legendary can be tedious, especially compared to how you can catch most without that struggle. The ability to use most Legendary Pokémon right after you capture them at their max potential might make Silvally slightly less appealing to some trainers.
Manaphy & Phione
Two Pokémon Tied To Many Exclusive Systems
There are few Mythical Pokémon as infamously hard to get as Manaphy or its pre-evolution Phione, who have been insanely difficult to obtain no matter what game they’re in. In the original Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, either Legendary was locked to the Pokémon Ranger spin-off game, only received through a transfer.
Similarly, the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes restricted how players could get these Legendary creatures. Only completing a quest in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or purchasing a pre-order bonus could get Manaphy, a trend seen later in Legends: Arceus too. In that spin-off, either Pokémon was locked into special events.
The ridiculous rarity of Phione goes even further than Manaphy, though, as engaging in the Pokémon breeding systems was the only way that Legendary was available for a long time. These Water-type Pokémon’s obscurity made them true mysteries, hardly spoken about because many players only knew they existed through official compendiums for the games they were in.
Pecharunt
Underwhelming Legendary After Extensive Completion Goals
Beyond the box art Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a very strange collection of Legendary pocket monsters. Pecharunt is perhaps the weirdest of all the Pokémon in this Generation of games, as it only exists deep into the endgame for players to catch. To obtain Pecharunt, you have to complete the main story in both the base game and both DLCs without missing any narrative content.
Once you beat every DLC story, you then have to use the Mystery Gift function to claim a “Mythical Pecha Berry” item. This item is only available if you’re connected online, creating another step in an already long process. With the item in hand, you can complete an epilogue quest to find Pecharunt, but at that point, many players may have already moved on.
This Mythical Pokémon has just never been appealing enough to justify the amount of effort it takes to find. Despite having a unique Poison/Ghost-type element, this Legendary Pokémon came out at a time when players were starting to either focus on Legends: Arceus or move on to the next Generation of Pokémon games.
