Where Do Duke and Florida Stand Heading Into Week 5?
Duke has rampaged past its opponents, winning seven straight games by 10 points or more. These included a 12-point victory over then-No. 24 Kansas (78-66) and a 15-point defeat of the SEC’s Texas team (75-60). The Blue Devils’ streak of double-digit wins ended on Nov. 27. They won over Arkansas by nine points, 80-71.
The Jon Scheyer-coached team has relied heavily on freshman workhorse Cameron Boozer. He has proven his worth to contend for the No. 1 pick in next year’s NBA draft. The 6’9″ son of NBA veteran Carlos Boozer is making an early case for postseason individual basketball awards. He has averaged 22.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game.
The Miami, Florida, native has led the team in scoring in five of Duke’s eight games. He has also topped the team rebounding charts in seven of the Blue Devils’ eight games. Even opposing coaches were amazed by how bull-strong Boozer played in their last game at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Arkansas coach John Calipari noted how bull-strong Boozer played in their last game at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. His physicality echoed that of his two-time All-Star father, who played for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA.
“Cameron was a beast,” Arkansas head coach John Calipari said of Cameron Boozer, who exploded for 35 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the nine-point win over the Razorbacks. “As soon as he figured out: I can put my shoulder into this guy’s chest and move him that’s all he did.”

Aside from Boozer, sophomores Patrick Ngongba II and Isaiah Evans have helped Duke’s rampage this season. Ngongba, the center, is averaging 12.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Evans, on the other hand, has put up 12.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 1.9 apg in eight games this season. The frontcourt duo helps ease the defensive pressure against them, each burying at least 2.4 3-pointers per outing.
On the other hand, defending champion Florida has been involved in tough contests in its first seven non-conference games, absorbing close losses to Arizona (93-87) and TCU (84-80). Although they have won against Florida State in a closely fought showdown, Todd Golden’s team has yet to win against a higher-ranked team this season.
Looking at key players, forward Thomas Haugh leads the Gators in scoring, averaging 17.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting a modest 45.2% from the field. Haugh receives strong support from four other Florida players who are also averaging double digits in scoring.
Alex Condon is the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 15.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.0 spg, and 1.2 bpg. In the backcourt, Arkansas transfer Boogie Fland and Urban Klavzar have provided solid production this season, combining for 22.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.5 apg, and 1.8 spg. Center Rueben Chinyelu has provided a lift in the Gators’ frontcourt, averaging 11.1 ppg and 10.9 rpg this season.
Turning to potential matchups, it will be interesting to see how Chinyelu holds steady against fellow bruiser Ngongba, and how Boozer stacks up against the Florida forward duo of Condon and Haugh. Additionally, the backcourt clash between Florida’s Fland, Klavzar, and Xaivian Lee and Duke’s Caleb Foster, Dame Sarr, and Isaiah Evans provides another highlight to anticipate in this clash.
Looking at their history, since the 1931-32 season, the two teams have met 16 times, with the Blue Devils leading the all-time series 13-3. Their most recent meeting came on November 26, 2017, in Portland, Oregon, where Duke won 87-84.
