Shedeur Sanders’ Major Flaws Exposed by NFL Analyst After Browns QB’s Struggles vs. 49ers

Sunday wasn’t just a loss; it was a harsh lesson in NFL velocity. For Shedeur Sanders, the leap from college icon to professional quarterback hit a wall named the San Francisco 49ers.

While the box score shows a touchdown, the tape reveals a rookie struggling to process the chaos before him, raising questions about his readiness for the professional game.

Why Is Sanders Struggling with NFL Speed?

The Browns fell to the 49ers and failed to gain any traction within the passing game. These shortcomings, however, appear rooted in Sanders’ inability to process the field at the standard speed of an NFL quarterback. While Sanders has thrown a touchdown in each of his first two starts, the efficiency and inconsistency in his game remain glaring issues.

These struggles are expected, considering he is a fifth-round rookie thrust into mid-season action after Cleveland cycled through two other quarterbacks. Sanders entered the league as a high-profile prospect despite his draft-day fall.

The Browns, who had already selected Dillon Gabriel two rounds earlier and signed Joe Flacco in free agency, took a swing on Sanders, knowing he was a raw project requiring refinement.

“Shedeur is still playing at college speed,” said NFL analyst and senior NFL Films producer Greg Cosell in an appearance on the Ross Tucker Podcast.

“He’s not dropping back with the quickness you need to drop back, he’s not getting back in the pocket and setting his feet. So, what happens is you end up being slow in what you’re seeing because you’re not really ready to process and deliver the football. This week, he did not see what he needed to see at the necessary speed. He was just playing a little slow twitch, and that’s very, very common for college quarterbacks, particularly those who spend almost all of their time in college in the shotgun. There’s no sense of, let’s get back in the pocket, let’s plant that back foot, let’s get ready to deliver the football.”

What Did the Film Reveal About Missed Opportunities?

Sanders completed 16 of his 25 passing attempts for 149 yards and a touchdown in the 26-8 loss. After registering a passer rating of 87.3 the week before in his first career start against the Las Vegas Raiders, Sanders improved statistically, turning in a rating of 93.6 versus San Francisco.

However, the film tells a different story. Cosell noted multiple instances where Sanders missed a wide-open Jerry Jeudy simply because he hesitated to throw. Despite the route design and concept matching up perfectly, the ball never came out. Jeudy finished with three receptions for 26 yards on four targets.

“It wasn’t a case where he didn’t see him, because that was the play design and he just did not turn the ball loose,” Cosell said. “I can’t tell you what’s in his head, but you can’t miss those kinds of plays where the play design works perfectly and he just didn’t turn it loose.”

The offensive struggles extend beyond the quarterback. Going by PFN’s Offense Impact metric, the Browns have the worst score in the league. Their 53.1 rating ranks No. 32 out of 32, and Sanders has yet to attempt enough passes to qualify for PFN’s QB Impact score. Sanders will log his third career start this weekend against the Tennessee Titans (1-11) at home. This matchup essentially becomes a battle for higher draft positioning next year rather than a push for playoff contention.
