It’s no secret that Red Dead Redemption 2 is already an absolutely massive game as it is. There’s a huge chunk of America to explore, filled with lush forests, vast lakes, and awe-inspiring mountain ranges.
With that said, I think most of us probably found it a little disappointing that our one and only trip to the fictional Caribbean island of Guarma didn’t exactly feel like a holiday. We end up in Guarma as part of the game’s story, and not under the best of circumstances. As such, we don’t really get to stop and explore. The good news? Now you can.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Players Can Explore Guarma Without Mods
It’s not even that hard to do
As it turns out, it’s possible to go and enjoy Guarma during a story mission and explore properly without being told you’re going out of bounds. While there are plenty of mods that let PC gamers do this, there’s also one way to get back to Guarma without any mods at all. That means you can do this on any platform, not just PC.
One dedicated player discovered this trick for getting back to Guarma without using mods, and it’s not even that hard to do. Perhaps more surprising is that there are actually things to see and do on Guarma in the areas we were never supposed to explore.
Over on the Red Dead Redemption 2 Reddit page, user 22ARuncornAvenue revealed what they found while playing “A Kind and Benevolent Despot”, the mission in which the gang rescues Javier.
During this mission, Dutch asks Arthur to indulge in a spot of sabotage and then wait outside. If you leave the building at this point, you can hop over a nearby rock wall and leave the mission area without getting the usual auto-fail for ditching a mission. From here, you can explore Guarma as much as you want without the mission failing, or without Arthur being gunned down by the invisible sniper.

Be warned that you’re breaking the game (a little bit) if you decide to do this, so there’ll be some weird glitches here and there. You won’t find any NPCs in previously populated areas. There are animals, but no horses to ride. You can even swim all the way back to the mainland if you have the patience, but the real draw here is getting to look around Guarma properly.
Oh, and you can’t shoot your weapon at any point while this glitch is in progress. The game still thinks you’re playing the mission to rescue Javier, so even if you head all the way back across the sea to Blackwater, if you fire your gun, the guards all the way back in Guarma will be alerted to your presence and execute poor Javier. That’s some impressive hearing.
It might not be the perfect way to do it, but if you’re a Red Dead Redemption 2 player looking to see how much detail went into Guarma, this is the way to do it without mods.
