After a lot of speculation, the new Divinity game from the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios, was finally announced during The Game Awards 2025 with a cinematic trailer. There were several rumors about its existence prior to its announcement, thanks to an enigmatic teaser that had been placed in Joshua Tree, California. The mysterious statue for TGA 2025 was finally confirmed to be a new Divinity game.
The video showcases a festival gone wrong, with the burning of a man resulting in tragedy to his bystanders. Larian Studios did not highlight the release date for Divinity, and given the development time on its previous project, Baldur’s Gate 3, the new game could still be many years away from arriving. There is still a lot that isn’t known about Larian’s next game, including what its gameplay could look like.
Everyone’s Arguing About Divinity’s Gameplay
Larian Studios Hasn’t Revealed How You’ll Play The Game
As was reported by PC Gamer, there is already a lot of discussion regarding Divinity’s approach to gameplay, with some arguing it will be a turn-based RPG, while others say it will be an ARPG (action RPG). The outlet highlights a tweet made by video game analyst Synth Potato, who says that there are rumors that the game will differ from BG3’s gameplay style and take on an action-based approach.
In response to them, writer David Jagneaux says that the decision would make sense, as “the Divinity series began as action RPGs,” followed by the Divinity: Original Sin series, which were considered spinoffs to the universe. Contrarily, content creator Neco42 calls Larian the “masters of turn-based,” stating that they “hope they don’t stray from what is obviously working for them.”
Why Turn-Based Makes Sense
Larian Has Become A Master At Turn-Based RPGs
Turn-based RPGs have, indeed, proven to be successful for Larian. The Divinity: Original Sin games and Baldur’s Gate 3 were enormous successes, especially compared to the original Divinity series. The studio has perfected its craft of turn-based RPGs; so much so that Baldur’s Gate 3 won several awards, including TGA 2023’s Game of the Year.
Furthermore, turn-based combat is back in the spotlight, with teams across the globe showing just how good the genre can be. Proof of this is shown by how Clair Obscur broke a record for the most awarded game at a TGA event in history. As such, I do believe that the new Divinity game will follow a turn-based approach.
Not only would Larian be working with a style in which it achieved excellence and learned so much about with the development of Baldur’s Gate 3, but it is a genre that still has a lot of unexplored potential, as shown by both BG3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, for example. Divinity will be a huge game, as confirmed by Larian Studios, so it’s quite possible it will follow the mold left by the Original Sin series and Baldur’s Gate 3.
Why An ARPG Makes Sense
An Action-Based Game Could Be A Return To The Studio’s Origins
There is also reason to believe that the new Divinity could be an ARPG, however. Even though Larian has become well-known for its turn-based RPGs, it does know how to craft action-based titles, and the new title could be a return to that genre, now with a new mindset earned from years of working on Baldur’s Gate 3. The studio’s previous title was not only great due to its gameplay, but also its remarkable story.
If Larian can pull off an action RPG with the storytelling might of BG3 in Divinity, there is a lot of potential for the new game. For now, it’s unclear exactly what approach the studio will follow. A turn-based RPG could be safer, given that it’s now their specialty, though an ARPG could be a return to its very foundation. We’ll have to wait to see what the new Divinity game has to offer.
