The Sci-Fi Movie That Is The Cinematic Event Of The Year Finally Arrives This Week

The biggest movie of the year is releasing in theaters this week, and this Sci-Fi film promises to expand one of the most extraordinary franchises in the genre. 2025 has not been a balanced year for theatrical releases. Though there have been major hits, such as Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie, films like The Running Man and Thunderbolts* underperformed.

Thankfully, the year is ending on a positive note. Disney’s Zootopia 2 has cleared the $1 billion mark and keeps climbing the box office charts. This week, another movie should not only start its path towards that same fate, but also likely end the year as its biggest performer. Of course, the new December 2025 movie release could only come from this iconic Sci-Fi franchise.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Finally Arrives This Week

The movie I’m talking about is the new entry in James Cameron’s acclaimed Avatar franchise. Avatar: Fire and Ash releases in theaters on November 19 in the United States. The film comes out 16 years after the original Avatar introduced fans to the immersive world of Pandora. It was preceded by Avatar: The Way of Water, which was released on December 16, 2022.

Aside from the movie itself, Avatar: Fire and Ash’s release is being closely watched by Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. That is because four Avengers: Doomsday trailers will reportedly be released in theaters with the Sci-Fi movie. Every trailer will play for one week, rotating to the next the following week. As such, the Avatar threequel’s event status has grown exponentially.

Why Avatar: Fire And Ash Is The Cinematic Event Of The Year

That said, while the Avengers trailer surely has me excited about my theatrical trip for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the movie itself is easily the biggest event of the year. After all, both Avatar films before it have grossed over $2 billion. The film could then become the highest-grossing film of the year if it maintains that streak, outgrossing Ne Zha 2’s 1.9 billion.

From a technical standpoint, I have never had a better 3D experience than when watching the Avatar movies in theaters. Cameron has a perfect understanding of how to make the most out of that tool, which works to make the world of Pandora immersive, aided by the gorgeous and innovative CGI that presents such gorgeous backdrops, characters, locations, and more.

The world of Pandora expands with the arrival of the Ash People, who are depicted as ruthless, determined warriors. The tribe’s inclusion not only adds great visuals related to their volcanic roots, but also offers a nice contrast between this darker part of Pandora and The Way of Water’s friendlier Water Clan. Anyone looking for a full-fledged Sci-Fi epic needs to check out Avatar: Fire and Ash.
