Anne Hathaway’s Critically-Panned Remake Of ’80s Classic Finds New Success On Netflix 6 Years Later

Netflix brings new success to one of the critically panned films more than five years after its release. Back in 2019, a classic from the 1980s was reimagined for a new generation, with Anne Hathaway starring in the fresh take.

As The Hustle is currently streaming on Netflix, the popular streaming service is bringing a big win for the remake, with Hathaway’s project currently being a global hit. For the week of December 8 – December 14, 2025, The Hustle emerged as #7 in Netflix’s Top 10 Movies worldwide.

The 2019 comedy, which also stars Rebel Wilson, has a funny background as it was a female remake of a different remake. Chris Addison’s movie was a female reboot of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was a remake of 1964’s Bedtime Story.

The Hustle, which was produced on a reported budget of $21 million, grossed $97.4 million at the worldwide box office, pulling in $35.4 million in the United States, while collecting $61.9 million internationally. Despite being a commercial success, its critical reception was a different story.

At the time of this article’s publication, The Hustle has a 13% rating on the Critics’ Score, based on 171 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The Popcornmeter has the film sitting at 44%.

In ScreenRant’s The Hustle movie review, Sandy Schaefer stated that Hathaway and Wilson-starring entry “isn’t painfully bad so much as it never really springs to life.” Schaefer also added that there was “certainly potential for something entertaining here, but the film shows gender-swapping on a superficial level isn’t enough to provide a decades-old setup with a new lease on life, or make it feel any less outdated than it already is.”
