Resident Evil Requiem is already aiming to up the ante for both the visceral horror and action sides of the series, taking the iconic horror franchise to even greater heights. While Requiem is already looking to be one of the most ambitious entries in the series so far in this regard, not every aspect of the Resident Evil series has received the same level of attention over the years.
From less-than-stellar live-action adaptations to unfortunately designed spinoff entries, not every Resident Evil project is made equal. Although there are plenty of lessons Requiem can learn from past entries in the series, and while Requiem has already showcased some exciting new changes to the series, one aspect was more than a little hard to ignore from its latest trailer.
Resident Evil’s Merchandise Situation Is Getting Out Of Hand
Even if it isn’t exactly new for Leon Kennedy to be sporting some surprisingly expensive combat gear, like this thousand-dollar leather jacket from Resident Evil 4, the latest Requiem easily takes the cake with some absurdly priced offerings.
From a collaboration with Porsche to offering two limited edition watches that range in the thousands to buy, it’s no surprise how many fans expressed confusion as to who exactly the products are for. While the style of Resident Evil Requiem‘s crossover with Porsche and Hamilton is still exciting from a visual concept level, the same can’t exactly be said for the more widely available merchandise of the series.
The Resident Evil Showcase trailer also unveiled several new collectible figures for Leon and Grace as official merchandise.
Despite being one of the most expensive projects in the franchise, Resident Evil‘s most recent line of official merchandise leading up to the release of Requiem has been laughably bad so far. Seen on the official Capcom store and it’s associated Amazon page, many of the designs have been highly criticized already for their strange design choices and incredibly simple presentation.
From official images with strange oil-like filters, a lack of visual cohesion, or simply slapping a square PNG over a plain T-shirt, the wearable merchandise for Resident Evil Requiem leaves a lot to be desired, outside of a few outliers like the ‘take a break’ design.
What makes the Resident Evil Requiem merchandise situation so confusing is that Capcom already has plenty of stylish yet still affordable options for their other franchises. Even outside the plethora of high-quality goodies offered by third-party partners like Fangamer, Capcom’s own store seems to have much more fitting merchandise for series ranging from Monster Hunter, Stree Fighter, and even its limited selection for Devil May Cry.
To top things off, Capcom already had a wearable partnership with N2 for the release of Monster Hunter Wild with their Hunter Jacket, which, while coming in at a premium price, was still a fraction of what it would cost to get a hold of Resident Evil‘s latest collaboration efforts.
Given that Resident Evil Requiem will likely have even more to offer once it releases, there’s plenty of reason to believe we’ll see more official merchandise for the series, but it seems like in the meantime, you’ll have to rely on the growing number of fan-made merchandise or third-party sellers to show off your love for the series in style.
