Canadian rapper Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, popularly known as Tommy Genesis, has released a controversial music video, True Blue, in which the rapper was seen covered in blue body paint. She finished the look by wearing deep red lipstick, golden jewelry, and a red bindi. Within minutes of upload, the video went viral on the internet, with many stating that she made an attempt to portray Maa Kali through her looks. She was seen holding a cross in her hand, which she further placed on numerous positions on her body. This has sparked a social media debate on the extent of freedom of speech.

What did Raftaar say in Genesis’s new video?

Indian rapper Raftaar slammed Genesis for her controversial music video. He urged his followers to report the video as it shows a complete disrespect for culture. He put the video on his Instagram story and wrote, “REPORT THIS,” “This is a mockery of my religion. This shouldn’t exist. Report This,” he added.

How have netizens reacted to Genesis’s controversial video?

Netizens didn’t hold back in slamming the rapper for her explicit music content. They expressed their disappointment and anger through comments. One of the users wrote, “Hindu aesthetics, our jewelry, and our customs have meaning and they are NOT for the West to appropriate.” The netizen further mentioned that disrespecting “our religion and Goddess” can’t make her “exotic”.
