12 Best Hostels in Glasgow for a Cool Stay

If you’re looking for a cheap and cozy place to stay in Glasgow, you’ve come to the right place. In this post, I used my experience and my knowledge of the city to share my picks for the top 13 hostels in Glasgow Scotland, where you can enjoy a cheerful and convenient stay without breaking the bank.

But as you’ll soon find out, there aren’t a huge number of hostels in Glasgow. Regardless, I’ve brought you the best of those hostels in this guide, plus lots of other affordable accommodation options for Glasgow.

Since you’re probably in a hurry, my quick recommendations are:

Note: You’ll find other articles on the web that recommend Euro Hostel Glasgow. Unfortunately, those articles are outdated. Euro Hostel Glasgow is the one I used to recommend as the best hostel in the city, but it permanently closed its doors in December 2023.

Today, your good friend at Travelness takes you to the 13 best hostels in Glasgow. Pack your bagpipes and come join the party!

Top 12 Best Hostels in Glasgow

Much less touristy than nearby Edinburgh, Glasgow is one of the best cities in Scotland for seeing an authentic slice of life (and it’s a decent place for a not-too-expensive UK break).

Below are my top picks for the best hostels in Glasgow, along with their features, benefits, and booking tips.

To help you find the perfect hostel for your needs, I’ve also created this interactive map that shows you where each hostel is located in the city.

1. Glasgow Youth Hostel

  • Best for: Quiet people, and/or those who like trendy districts
  • Location: Kelvinbridge
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? Yes, but you have to book in advance (and pay more). To do so, call them on +44 (0) 141 332 3004

Of all the hostels in Glasgow, this has the highest rating — and if you want comfortable and clean, this is the hostel for you.

That said, it’s not the most sociable place on the planet, and the guests tend to be slightly-older people. It’s a retro hiker-style hostel, rather than one of the modern versions we’re all so used to now.

It’s a bit sanitized and a bit dated, but it’s friendly and welcoming. They have bike storage, and they allow dogs.

The best thing about this place is its location: it sits in Kelvinbridge (which, along with neighboring Finnieston, is the coolest district in the city)…

… so you won’t make many friends in the hostel, but you might make friends while you’re exploring the area. Expect independent venues, lots of coffee and avocados, and a load of young party-lovers.

The hostel is in a very beautiful location with amazing view, gives the vibes of rich and secluded neighborhood. The interior is a gorgeous Georgian building very well preserved. The staff is very helpful and always there. We stayed in a private double room and it was very clean, my only complaint would be the bed that is so narrow that I’m pretty sure that a larger person wouldn’t be able to fit. Anyway I would recommend the place!

2. Safestay Glasgow Charing Cross

  • Best for: Backpacking couples who want to save money and stay solo
  • Location: Right beside Glasgow Charing Cross Station
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

A good pick for budget-conscious couples, this is one of the tidiest and cleanest hostels in Glasgow. It offers both dorm rooms and private rooms, along with comfortable beds and clean bathrooms.

Overall, it has a bit of a hotel vibe. There’s no common kitchen, there are no great social spaces (yeah, there’s a common room, but you won’t make many friends here), and most guests are pretty quiet.

If you’re fine with privacy, stay here. If you want a sociable vibe, don’t.

Super nice beds, blackout curtains, shelf, light. Bathroom showerhead was stuck at an angle, which made it a little difficult to shower. Staff came in and did a really efficient cleaning job. Vibe was kind of off in my room, which just happens sometimes, but overall atmosphere wasn’t amazing. Staff was really really nice. In a good spot, felt safe and close to grocery store & coffee shops.

3. Clyde Hostel

  • Best for: Budget backpackers
  • Location: beside Finnieston
  • Price range: $
  • Pet-friendly? No

Whoever manages this place seems to be… let’s just say… a little angry.

The hostel itself is okay. Yeah, it’s very basic and a little beyond its best… but, you know, it’s a hostel.

… and that’s often what you get at a hostel.

This exact sentiment is made very clear by the owner, who uses Hostelworld to vent his frustrations: he replies to most negative reviews with a lot of fury, and even the Hostelworld description is oddly passive-aggressive. Read for yourself.

Ultimately though, the owner is right (even though he definitely has an unusual communication style). This is very affordable, very basic, and very backpacker-orientated.

Perks include a pretty sociable atmosphere, a good kitchen, a convenient location, and free tea and coffee.

Overall, for people who want a cheap and simple place, this is the best hostel in Glasgow. And because its low prices make it pretty popular, it’s also a good location for making friends.

4. Revolver Hotel

  • Best for: Couples and groups of backpackers
  • Location: Merchant City
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

This place is kooky and cozy, it offers lots of modern touches, and it’s home to pod-style beds and super-comfy mattresses.

Hostels aren’t normally this fancy or luxurious.

They have dorm rooms and private rooms, with options for pretty much all budgets.

It isn’t the most sociable place on the planet, so it’s best for couples, or groups of friends (solo travelers might find themselves a bit isolated here).

Pro Tip: Revolver Hotel sits in Merchant City, another of Glasgow’s trendiest areas. Expect live music, repurposed venues, brunch-based eateries, and loads of hipsters.

Honestly, the best hostel I’ve been to overall. Also the most expensive, but hey.. can’t win them all. Bed was super comfy, with curtains. Two sets of lockers. Even though there was only 1 toilet/shower for two large dorms, I never had to wait. THE STAFF ARE SO FRIENDLY!!!!!!! Loved the vibe and decor of the interior.. Super cool. Loved it. Great location. If I come back to Glasgow, I’ll stay here!

5. Hampton Court Guesthouse

  • Best for: Young couples who like hip neighborhoods
  • Location: The northwestern part of the city center
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

Since this is a guesthouse, it’s not really one of the best hostels in Glasgow (and that’s basically something I’m going to keep saying again and again in this guide—as I mentioned, there aren’t many hostels in Glasgow… so from here on, you won’t see any more of them).

Anyway, whatever you want to call the place, this is one of the city’s best accommodations for couples.

It’s a retro-style bed & breakfast place, so you can expect warm welcomes, friendly hosts, a big and filling (British-style) breakfast, large bedrooms, and excellent value for money. It’s a little dated, but not in any major way.

Because Hampton Court Guesthouse sits in the northwestern part of the city center, this is a good spot for exploring all the central stuff, all the outskirt-y canal stuff, and all the hip hangouts in Kelvinbridge and Finnieston. A perfect location!

Absolutely loved this little place! The beds were comfortable, the shower hot (if a little lacking in pressure), the aesthetic lovely, the location perfect (close to the tourist downtown but not so close as to have to deal with the noise), and the staff incredibly helpful and kind. I would definitely stay here again if I ever return to Glasgow!

6. CitizenM Glasgow

  • Best for: Couples who don’t mind paying a little extra
  • Location: City center, close to Queen Street railway station
  • Price range: $$$
  • Pet-friendly? No

Again, since this isn’t really a hostel, this isn’t really one of the best hostels in Glasgow.

But it is one of the best hotels in Glasgow. And it’s a good choice if you don’t mind spending a little extra money to get a lot more perks.

It’s much more modern and trendy than most other places we’ve brought you. All arty and edgy, its chic colorful decor is kooky, and you operate lights and blinds by fiddling around with an iPad in the bedroom (fancy!).

Everything is spacious and comfortable (the beds, the rooms, the showers), and the breakfast has some healthy options (expect eats and treats like salmon, avocado, and fruits).

Yes, this place is probably a bit more expensive than you were hoping for. But in terms of value for money, I don’t think there’s anything better on our list.

Location was perfect for a gig just outside the city centre. It’s clean and a bit more fun than your standard hotel. Staff are always so friendly whenever I have visited here from check in to visiting the bar. As a solo traveller it’s feels safe here too which is important to me. Beds are super comfortable and the addition of the little iPad to set the mood for your room with lighting or to control tv, blinds etc is a fun touch too.

7. EasyHotel Glasgow

  • Best for: Couples
  • Location: City center, close to Queen Street railway station
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

Sitting close to citizenM Glasgow, this is one of the best budget-friendly hotels in the city. It’s a bit simple, but it’s comfortable and cozy enough.

The rooms are basic, there’s no soundproofing, and you don’t get any free tea or coffee (or breakfast options, or any extra perks).

But the prices here (on some days) are pretty similar to the prices you get in some of Glasgow’s hostels. Overall, good for a low-price romantic break (assuming you don’t have high romantic-break standards).

Again, it’s a pretty central location, in the northern part of the center of the city.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The location being so near the city centre was good. The room was small but it was fine for myself, there was a space under the bed that you could fit a bag or a small suitcase. The bed was very comfortable, clean and the towel in the bathroom was clean. I noticed people commented on the smallness of the shower, yes, perhaps, but I had a really good shower and could turn around in it. There was plenty of hot water both in the sink and shower, so washing, cleaning teeth etc was no problem. It is a budget hotel, so there are things that I am prepared to tolerate given the room was such a reasonable price.

8. Merchant City Inn

  • Best for: Couples who want cut-price privacy
  • Location: Merchant City, right beside Revolver Hotel
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

Yep, this place has an entry on Hostelworld… so you would expect it to be one of the best hostels in Glasgow.

But it’s actually just a hotel, with no dorm rooms, no real common spaces, and no shared kitchen.

That said, it’s affordable and homely, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the prices are low.

And because (just like Revolver Hotel) it sits in Merchant City, it’s in a perfect location for exploring loads of hipster hotspots.

Location close to Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queens. Close to to nice shopping district. Rooms clean and serviced well. Staff helpful and knowledgeable about trips from city to other parts of Scotland. No kitchen facilities but staff will put your stuff in fridge and retrieve it for you when asked.

9. Kelvingrove Hotel

  • Best for: Older couples
  • Location: Right beside Kelvingrove Park
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

Another basic but affordable place, and another guesthouse-style option offering small rooms and big breakfasts.

Kelvingrove Hotel is friendly and homely, the rooms have lots of natural light, the staff are welcoming, and the beds are very comfortable. The main breakfast offering is standard English-style, and it’s pretty good.

If you want a balance between city stuff and green spaces, this is a great location. The hotel sits right beside the massive Kelvingrove Park (and therefore right beside all the hipster fun of both Finnieston and Kelvinhaugh).

Hotel was in a great area of town, close to Kelvingrove museum and convention facilities. Hotel not fancy but had character in a Victorian-era neighbourhood. Staff were friendly and down to earth …with authentic Glasgow quirkiness. Standard Scottish breakfast served with personality.

10. Albion Hotel

  • Best for: Older couples
  • Location: North of Kelvingrove Park
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? No

Comfy and cozy, this place sits inside an old home… and it looks exactly like it sits inside an old home. Expect high ceilings, old fireplaces, retro decor, and ugly carpets.

Other features include friendly faces, nice hosts, big bedrooms, and a good buffet breakfast.

This is one of the best options on our list for people who like to stay outside of city centers—sitting just north of Kelvingrove Park, it’s northwest of Glasgow’s central stretch, and far from most of the busy bustle.

Here, you get some of the city’s best green spaces, including Glasgow Botanic Gardens, northern parts of Kelvingrove Park, and strollable* (and cyclable) stretches of the River Kelvin (for a big adventure, go all the way to Dawsholm Park, before then taking a train back to central Glasgow).

A wonderfully comfortable stay as I visited Glasgow on a mini staycation, loved having my own bathroom, room was a good size and not cramped, bed was comfortable, and the hosts were lovely! Wonderful breakfast included each morning. It is about 30 to 40 minutes walking from the city centre with underground nearby to make the journey shorter.

11. Ibis Budget Glasgow

  • Best for: Families who want an affordable stay
  • Location: West of the city center
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? Yes

Another good chain option, the ibis budget Glasgow is pretty much like any other low-cost chain hotel. It’s comfortable enough, it’s clean enough, and it’s well-equipped enough (but, of course, it’s not going to amaze you with anything particularly interesting or innovative).

Biggest perks include friendly staff, a dog-friendly policy, and a continental buffet breakfast. The rooms are a little small.

It’s not the best location (to get from here to the very center of the city, you’ll need to walk around 30 minutes or take a bus), but it’s a perfect choice for families:

They have big multi-bed rooms, a kids’ play area, and lots of nearby family-friendly fun.

These family-friendly highlights include Hollywood Bowl (a popular funfest with bowling, arcade games, and an American-style diner), Wonder World Soft Play Glasgow (featuring themed areas, loads of play, and an astroturf football pitch), and Glasgow Science Centre (with a planetarium, a theater, and lots more interactive stuff).

Friendly staff. Lovely continental breakfast good check out time. Free parking!! Bonus. Right next to lots of lovely food places and hollywood bowling. Great value for the money. Tea and coffee facilities in a nice seating area and water.

12. Ibis Glasgow City Centre

  • Best for: People who want a good breakfast
  • Location: Western part of the city center—close to Charing Cross railway station
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet-friendly? Yes

Last up, another ibis option (but this one sits in the city center, instead of on the outskirts).

Again, it’s what you’d expect from a budget hotel (though, because it’s in the city center, it’s vaguely pricier than the other ibis option).

It’s clean and minimalistic (with some pretty trendy touches), it offers a 24-hour bar, and the buffet breakfast has a huge range of good-quality stuff (expect cooked food, pastries, fruits, cereals, spreads, and plenty more). And on top of all that, the hotel sits in a good central location.

All in all, a reliable option for pretty much anyone (except solo travelers who are conscious about budget).

The friendliness of staff on reception and their ability to make me feel welcome and provide all the information I needed for my stay. How clean and warm my room was. Got a great sleep in a comfortable bed. Plenty of tea & coffee facilities. The breakfast in the morning was fab. Good range of foods that were tasty. Great coffee.

Pro Tips for Staying at Hostels in Glasgow

  • As you’ve probably worked out by now, there aren’t many hostels in Glasgow. And the better places (especially in summer) sell out very quickly. So if you want to stay in a specific place, make sure you book in advance.
  • If you won’t be staying in the city for very long, find a hostel close to Glasgow Central Station, cos that’s where many trains come and go from. Your best option for easy travel is Revolver Hotel.
  • Although Glasgow is a great place to visit, it’s not a typical backpacker choice, so don’t expect to make many friends here (you won’t find super-sociable hostels in Glasgow, like you will in many parts of mainland Europe). That said, if you do want to make friends, your best option is Clyde Hostel.
  • … and if you do want to make friends in Glasgow, consider joining an organized tour from the city (they’re often more sociable than the hostels). Here’s a list of all the best Glasgow tours in 2023.
  • If you’re not a party person, consider staying in a hotel or a guesthouse, instead of in a hostel. Many people come to Glasgow to party—so if that’s not your plan, try to find a quieter accommodation (or at least get a private room in a hostel and carry some earplugs).

Before You Go

And just like that, we’ve reached the end of this guide. They’re the 12 best hostels in Glasgow!

To sum up for you, the best overall option is Glasgow Youth Hostel — it’s the best hostel in Glasgow, it’s comfortable, it’s clean, and it sits close to the center of the city.

The best option for couples is Hampton Court Guesthouse, it’s welcome and homely, and the breakfast is great, while the best budget pick is the very basic but very affordable Clyde Hostel, it’s nothing special, but it gives you an affordable base.
