Making progress in Persona5: The Phantom X isn’t just about obtaining thieves and leveling them up. Players will need to take advantage of each thief’s Persona, and raise their skill levels in order to be more effective in battles.
A Persona’s skills are a lot like the four moves a Pokémon learns and uses in battle. Personas have access to four skills each, and raising their levels helps inflict more damage in battle, while also recovering more health, and providing better buffs and debuffs.

Monster Hunter Wilds doesn’t have a traditional upgrade system when it comes to skills. Here’s how to upgrade equipment skills.
Depending on what type of Persona each thief has, it’s important to raise these levels if you want to make it out alive in some of the tougher battles. It isn’t rocket science. The stronger your Persona skills are, the better your chances are of successfully running through a mission.
This guide will give you the walkthrough you need to level up your Persona’s skills, what the difference is between the main character’s system and that of the other thieves, and where you can stockpile necessary items used to boost those skills.
How To Level Up Phantom Thieves’ Skills
Every thief in Persona5: The Phantom X comes with their own personal Persona, equipped with skills that can turn the tables in any fight.
Follow the steps below to level up each Persona’s skill, and pay attention to the boost those skills receive after each increase.
- Go to the Thieves tab.
- Select the thief of your choice, and then select Persona.
- In the Persona menu, select the skill you wish to level and then press ‘Level Up’ in the bottom right corner.
- Select OK to finalize your skill upgrade.
It’s that simple, but that’s just the easy part. The difficult thing about this process is accumulating enough incense to level up those skills, as they take up more of the specific item with each level upgrade.
From levels one to three, players will need Skill Incense S, and that changes from levels four to six, as you’ll then need to up your game and use Skill Incense M. The final four levels, up until skill level ten, require Skill Incense L, the most difficult one of the three to acquire.

Unfortunately, Persona5: The Phantom X isn’t here to make things easy for you, so it’s time to dive into the grind.
Luckily, players can exchange a number of Skill Incense S for one Skill Incense M, and the same for Skill Incense M for one Skill Incense L, making the grind feel less tedious.
How To Level Up Leader’s Persona Skills
For the main character of Persona5: The Phantom X, raising up the Persona’s skills works a bit differently.
Since you can mix and match different Personas, this gives you the flexibility to build up multiple of them for different purposes.
- Go to the Thieves tab.
- Select the main character, and then Velvet Room.
- Once inside the Velvet Room, select Persona Training.
- In the Persona Training menu, select the persona you wish to level and then press ‘Enhance’ in the bottom right corner.
- Select OK to finalize your skill upgrade.
- Don’t forget to Overclock your Persona when available, to raise its max level.
The main character’s Personas don’t take Skill Incense to raise their level; instead, they use items such as Memory Cubes, Anecdote Cubes, and Legend Cubes.
Seals are also applicable, but you’re more likely to accumulate more cubes, which are routinely found in treasure chests.
Once the max level is reached, players will have the option to Overclock, which raises the Persona’s stats and traits.
You’ll need the Persona’s specific seal or a Regent to do so, and these items aren’t nearly as accessible or easy to find compared to those cubes. You can acquire them if you fuse duplicates of the one Persona you want to Overclock.
