James Gunn shares an overwhelmingly positive reaction after reading The Batman Part II script. Even though The Batman was a critical and commercial success following its release in 2022, the highly anticipated sequel has faced numerous delays.
Matt Reeves recently shared the long-awaited Batman Part II news that the script is finally completed. Even though the film is not part of the new DC Universe that Gunn is building, it is still part of DC’s Elseworlds brand, which is for projects that are not part of the new canon.
On the Superman red carpet, ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan asked Gunn if he had read the script yet. Gunn replied, “It’s great!” in response to Crossan’s question and walked away smiling.

Despite the brevity of Gunn’s comments, his response is highly encouraging and bodes well for the movie’s future. Gunn has previously spoken about finished, quality scripts being essential for projects to move forward. Not only is The Batman Part II‘s script completed, but Gunn makes it clear that it is a high-quality script that he has faith in.
Even though it is an Elseworlds project and not part of the new canon he is developing, Gunn still wants to see every upcoming DC movie succeed. Now that the script is finished and Gunn is satisfied with it, The Batman Part II filming can begin later this year in preparation for the October 1, 2027 release date.
This Makes Matt Reeves’ Recent Update Even Better
While The Batman Part II is still far off from being released, it is a relief to finally have a sense of forward momentum and to see how much Gunn is supporting the project. The sequel seemed like a project stuck in development that might never come to fruition, but that is no longer the case, and more substantial developments are poised to come soon thanks to the script’s status.

As someone who has loved Gunn’s work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, if he says The Batman Part II script is great, I am inclined to believe him. Of course, the first movie’s quality speaks for itself as well, and with Reeves taking the time to get it right and Gunn’s faith in it, there is plenty of reason to be excited about what lies ahead.
