Speaking on a recent episode of the Locked On College Basketball podcast, analyst Andy Patton called Johnson “a monstrous get for Michigan and coach Dusty May in the transfer portal.”
However, Patton was quick to point out the significant challenge facing the Illinois transfer.
“Tough shoes to fill as well,” Patton noted during his podcast analysis. “We talked about Anderson having to replace Hawkins. Morez Johnson’s got to replace Danny Wolf and Vlad Golden for Dusty May.”
Both Wolf and Golden were key pieces of Michigan’s frontcourt rotation in 2024-25 before departing.
Johnson arrives in Ann Arbor with solid credentials from his freshman season at Illinois, where he averaged 7.0 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 64.2% from the field. His wrist injury cut short what was becoming a promising debut campaign, but his recent international success adds confidence to his Michigan prospects.
The pairing of Johnson with star transfer Yaxel Lendeborg creates an intriguing frontcourt combination for the Wolverines. Patton notes, “Johnson is a much more traditional big than Lendeborg, and his biggest strength is easily his rebounding ability.”
The analyst also highlights how “Johnson runs the floor really well in transition, and when he doesn’t beat his man down the floor, he can set a screen for Lendeborg, Elliot Cadeau, or another ball handler off the wing to roll to the rim.” This complementary skill set allows both players to maximize their strengths in Michigan’s system.

His championship game performance against Germany proved particularly clutch, as Johnson delivered when it mattered most. Patton praised his performance in the title game, where Johnson recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds while shooting an exceptional 5-of-6 from the field.

Patton believes Johnson is prepared for the challenge ahead, stating, “I think he’s more than ready to do that, assuming health for him.”
