I Love You All, But No

Just a few months after Onyx Storm‘s release, the anticipation for the next Fourth Wing book is already high — so much so that a Goodreads page for The Empyrean book 4 has already surfaced. With confirmation that there will be two more installments in Rebecca Yarros’ beloved romantasy series, that isn’t surprising on its own.

However, the Goodreads page reportedly listed the expected publication date for the next Fourth Wing book as January 1, 2026 — something the platform appears to have corrected. Yarros took to Instagram to clarify in a now-deleted story that Onyx Storm‘s sequel will not be out in that timeframe, writing over a screenshot of the Goodreads page:

“Let me put this rumor to rest. I love you all, but no. That release date is impossible.”

This isn’t much of a surprise for anyone who has been following Yarros, as the author has been vocal about taking her time with the fourth Empyrean book. She is currently working on a contemporary romance novel, which will be written before she returns to Navarre.

While Yarros’ return to writing does bring us a step closer to the next Fourth Wing book, there’s still a wait ahead for fans of The Empyrean Series. It’s great that Yarros is upfront about that, ensuring that readers know what to expect — and what won’t be possible — on the heels of Onyx Storm‘s ending.

In general, the Fourth Wing author has been transparent about her writing process and timelines, especially after the short gap between the first book and Iron Flame. In 2023, she told Entertainment Weekly that the turnaround for Iron Flame was “hard on [her] body,” which, thankfully, led to a more manageable one for Onyx Storm.

Speaking with Elle two years later, Yarros once again touched on how chronic illness impacted her writing. And she made it abundantly clear that she would be taking a break after Onyx Storm‘s publication:

“I’ve been really clear that I’m going to rest now. I drove my body to a place that was untenable, and I knew it, and my family knew it, and my husband knew it, and it shouldn’t have happened. I shouldn’t have allowed it to happen.”

The Transparency Surrounding The Next Fourth Wing Book Is Refreshing

Rebecca Yarros Often Keeps Readers In The Loop

Although readers are eager for the next installment of The Empyrean Series, Yarros’ continued transparency is refreshing. Understandably, she’s quick to address any misconceptions about her upcoming releases. And while she doesn’t owe readers updates about her timelines, she tends to keep them in the loop through her social media posts.
