Wednesday, Netflix’s unique reinterpretation of The Addams Family franchise, has received a major season 3 writing update ahead of the show’s season 2 premiere. Netflix recently revealed that Wednesday season 3 was already in the works. While this news was certainly a welcome relief, it wasn’t necessarily surprising, given the first season’s immense success – alongside Stranger Things and Squid Game, it’s one of the streamer’s most popular shows of all time.
While the first half of Wednesday season 2 is mere days away, the wait for the second season has been long. The series first premiered in November 2022, roughly two and a half years ago, which is a significant hiatus, even among other Netflix Originals. Thankfully, though, there’s a chance we won’t have to wait as long for Wednesday season 3.
In an interview with Collider, Wednesday co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar revealed that, while they’d be taking a break to mark the premiere of season 2, work on the third season was already well underway:
“We’re actually in the writers’ room for season 3. So we’re down the road a bit in the writers’ room, but now we, of course, stop to launch season 2.”
The duo also confirmed that season 3 of Wednesday would consist of eight episodes, although horror-comedy legend Tim Burton’s directorial involvement was still uncertain. Burton directed four episodes in both season 1 and season 2.
What This Means For Wednesday Season 3
We Might Not Have To Wait As Long
In light of Wednesday‘s nearly three-year-long wait, the creators’ update is incredibly promising. If the showrunners are already working on season 3 of Wednesday, there’s a real chance we won’t have to wait as long for the third season. Presumably, Wednesday‘s upcoming season will be just as, if not even more successful, than season 1. Surely, Netflix will want to maintain the show’s momentum.

Wednesday Season 2 Totally Flips The Script On Jenna Ortega’s Return To Nevermore
A lot has changed since Wednesday’s first year at Nevermore Academy, and the same can be said about Jenna Ortega’s return for season 2.
In that same interview with Collider, Gough and Millar, who also created Smallville, explained that shooting a single, eight-episode season of Wednesday takes roughly nine months. The visual effects work is so demanding, though, that the pair explained:
“…18 months would be the bare minimum we can get the show back up just from production to air.”
If we’re lucky, the progress in the writers’ room means we’ll see Wednesday season 3 in two years, rather than nearly three.
Our Take On Wednesday’s Future
Netflix Believes In The Show’s Success
While it’s impossible to say what Wednesday season 3 will be about without having seen season 2, it’s clear that Netflix believes in the show’s future. With season 2 set to give the rest of Wednesday’s family more to do – it’s also introducing new family members, like Grandmama Addams – there may be room for the show’s mysteries to grow beyond the haunted halls of Nevermore in season 3.

During a separate interview, Millar also recently shared that he and Gough are willing to “take as many seasons as Netflix wants to give us,” and that they already have ideas in mind for the show’s future. As we count down the days until season 2, we can at least rest easy that Wednesday won’t be canceled any time soon.
