GoFundMe launched for Sheffield Wednesday protest and action fund with letter sent to the EFL

A GoFundMe page has been launched for an upcoming Sheffield Wednesday protest and action fund with a letter also sent to the EFL.

Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust tweeted on the 1st of August: “Sheffield Wednesday is facing the gravest crisis in its modern history. For years, we’ve watched our club crumble under Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.

“In the last few months alone, staff and players have gone unpaid, academy scholars have been left waiting, senior players have handed in their notice and walked away for free, and promising young talent has been sold at cut-price fees to cover debts caused by incompetence.

“Now, the iconic North Stand — a symbol of Hillsborough — has been closed after years of neglect and a complete disregard for fan safety.

“The Supporters’ Trust is doing everything it can to bring about the end of Chansiri’s ownership — and this includes protesting.

“Details of the protest at Leicester away will be announced over the weekend, with plans for Stoke to follow next week.

“⚫️🟡 Support Our Fight – GoFundMe for SWFC Protest & Action Fund ⚫️🟡

“The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust is committed to standing up for our club, its fans, and its community.

In recent months, we have seen unpaid staff and a club in crisis. We have continually worked to support those affected, while also planning and funding impactful protest action to hold those responsible to account.

“To make the strongest possible stand, we need your help. We have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise vital funds that will allow us to:

• Support unpaid workers where we can
• Organise protest activities that gain maximum impact and media exposure
• Continue to campaign for positive change at our football club

“Every donation, big or small, takes us one step closer to making a difference.

“Another powerful way to support our work is to become a paid member of the Trust. Membership not only strengthens our collective voice but also gives you:

• The right to vote on Trust matters
• The opportunity to help shape the actions we take
• A direct say in how we stand up for our club

“Whether through a donation or by joining the Trust, your support is crucial.

“5% of all funds raised will be donated to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

“Together, we can make our voices heard. #SWFC #EnoughlsEnough

The Trust, all six Sheffield MPs, and Lord David Blunkett have co-signed and issued this letter to the EFL…

“Observations and Concerns

“Dear English Football League,

“Thank you for the meeting on Thursday 24′ July. There were several issues raised during our discussion of the ownership of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club (SWFC) where it was indicated the EFL were unable to give us answers. We remain unclear whether that was because the EFL did not have the relevant information with which to provide answers, the EFL are in the process of trying to obtain the information, or the EFL is not interested in finding out the information.

“For clarity, these are the key questions that MPs representing the Sheffield constituencies, Lord Blunkett, and the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust are seeking answers to.

“Funding of SWFC by Dejphon Chansiri

• What does the EFL know about the sources of funding by which Dejphon Chansiri has operated SWFC during his ownership? What are his sources of funding?

• Given that DC has clearly failed to his previous business plans what credibility can the EFL give to any future commitments he makes?

• If Dejphon Chansiri has funded SWFC through personal borrowing as alleged, has the EFL investigated the credibility and legitimacy of his lenders? Who are they?

• Has the EFL examined whether the lenders to Dejphon Chansiri have any degree of control or influence in the operation of SWFC?

• Has the EFL investigated any benefits Dejphon Chansiri or others might secure from owning a loss-making enterprise in the UK?

• Has the EFL investigated any potential financial connections between Dejphon Chansiri and various influential families in Thailand — specifically the Piempongsant family, who have been involved in football at Reading, Sheffield Wednesday (through Phubase ‘Pete’ Piempongsant), Oxford United, R.E. Mouscron and Panathinaikos? The Piempongsants are directors of the Empire Asia investment group, and have very close ties to Thaksin Shinawatra.

Additionally, Pairoj Piempongsant is a director of Intercarabao Ltd, UK arm of the Thai energy drink company and EFL sponsor, Carabao.

The Sale of SWFC by Dejphon Chansiri

• Has the EFL considered why Dejphon Chansiri still appears resistant to selling the club?

• Has the EFL researched the sales process instigated by Dejphon Chansiri and allegations that it departs from accepted credible practices?

• Has the EFL considered the so-called bid by Guardascione and why Dejphon Chansiri reportedly appeared to be working outside of his own sales process, allegedly based on forged documentation?

Consequence of being unable to fulfil fixtures

• If Sheffield Wednesday is unable to fulfil its fixtures – either due to an inadequate playing squad or because players refuse to play after repeatedly going unpaid – what action would the EFL take in response?

Clive Betts MP and Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust have been in contact with the incoming English Football Regulator who we know will have more powers to deal with these issues. We hope however the EFL will be willing to demonstrate all its current powers to investigate the issues of concern we have raised before the regulator comes into being.

We hope the EFL will use all the powers it currently has to prevent the collapse of one of the oldest clubs in Football.

Kind regards,

The undersigned

Clive Betts MP (Sheffield South East)

Olivia Blake MP (Sheffield Hallam)

Gillian Furniss MP (Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough)

Louise Haig MP (Sheffield Heeley)

Abtisam Mohamed MP (Sheffield Central)

Marie Tidball MP (Penistone and Stocksbridge)

Rt Hon. the Lord Blunkett
