“I’m sick of hearing that” – Frustrated Bolton fans react to chant in defeat at Stockport

“I’m sick of hearing that” – Frustrated Bolton fans react to a chant heard being sung by the home fans in defeat at Stockport.

Malik Mothersille scored with a first-half tap-in on his Stockport County debut, Bolton struck the post twice, and Kyle Wootton’s 89th-minute header secured all three points for the Hatters at Edgeley Park.

Following the opening weekend of the 2025/26 League One season, Stockport, who finished 3rd last season, sit 5th after their excellent start, while Bolton, who caused problems but couldn’t find the net, are 22nd. Very early days, 45 games to play out.

Stockport manager Dave Challinor speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a clunky performance, we would have been lucky to go in level [at half-time]. We went in in front, which was great. Performances aren’t going to be the best at this time of year.

“I still needed to see more around what we are, being front foot and aggressive. We were too passive first half. We were more like it second half without being fluent. To win in the manner we did was really pleasing.

“Every player we brought in knows what is expected in terms of how we play and we’ve got to stick with that.”

Challinor told BBC Radio Manchester:

“It was a brilliant three points. I was disappointed with our first-half performance – we were lucky to go in, in front and would have been fortunate to go in level. I was desperate for half-time, when I could speak to the players.

“The second half was much better in terms of what I want our team to look like. We were a little bit clunky in possession, and had to change shape because of personnel we had available for the game.

“We want to be attacking and score goals, and pride ourselves on clean sheets. We had 18 last season and we want to improve on that, so it’s one ticked off.”

Bolton manager Steven Schumacher speaking to Sky Sports: “Disappointed to lose the game; we wanted to come here and take something against a really good opponent. There is a lot about our performance we can be pleased with.

“We created good chances but didn’t hit the target enough. Without the ball we were organised but they were clinical in the moments that mattered.

“We should have hit the target more. It is disappointing. Football is about small margins, we’ve come out on the wrong side today. We are disappointed but we move on.

“We didn’t get the rub of the green with a few decisions today. That is football. It happens. We don’t want to rely on calls to decide games.”

Schumacher told BBC Radio Manchester:

“It was a game we probably didn’t deserve to lose. We created enough opportunities again in some brilliant areas and didn’t make the most of them.

“In the two moments that mattered, they’ve been more clinical than we have. Disappointed to lose, but enough positivity in there against a really good team, as we’ve created enough to win the game.

“We were up against a side who pass and move the ball really well, but we were in control of those situations. I didn’t feel we were under pressure for many moments, and we got into some good areas from an attacking point of view.”

Stockport’s Corey Addai speaking to Sky Sports: “Last season was disappointing for the club. Finishing in third in our first season in League One was tremendous; the lads grafted so hard.

“This season we’ve got the same goals, same objectives, but we want to improve in areas. Today we showed how much we’ve improved; it has been a great pre-season so hopefully we can continue to do that.”

Stockport’s Malik Mothersille speaking to Sky Sports: “Delighted with the goal and three points. It wasn’t my best performance today. That is why you have great team-mates to back you up. They helped me.

“I was frustrated because I know what I am capable of. I’m glad to get the three points; the goal is a bonus. I’m happy.”

Frustrated Bolton fans react to a cheeky chant in their defeat at Stockport, here’s what twitter users made of it…

@sqidgeman: Sad thing is that it’s true. We do get battered everywhere we go. Laughing stock of league one forever #bwfc

@robvearnals: We were in the Cheadle end, I was totting up how many times we’d played & beaten Bolton recently- you must hate playing us! Albeit you were better than us 1st half but didn’t put your chances away & we did

@cwarb1: It’s true though. Every local fixture we hear it. I also think do the players not get bored of hearing it because I know if I was on a pitch I’d feel like it’s taking the piss just as much as I do as a fan!

@GazEcc89: I think it’s more the point you just can’t seem to beat us. Even when we were non league!

@cwarb1: 3 losses and 8-0 on agg over the last 3 fixtures is an absolutely honking return for us. Wigan is similar we didn’t beat them for 10 years. Basically anyone within a 20 mile radius is guaranteed 3 points.

@GazEcc89: I’ve a Bolton mate who’s been very optimistic, but even prematch& with our injuries I still thought it stunk of a county win 😂 Mansfield have been our bogey team over the yrs. You look a much better side compared to last year, you’ll be fine. Another day you’d be 3-0 up 1st half

@langutang: Hate hearing that “Bolton get battered…” chant when we haven’t, and aren’t #bwfc

@scfc_magic:
🎶 get battered, everywhere they go!
Bolton get battered, everywhere they gooooooo

@deb_chap: Bolton get battered 😬 #scfc #wafc #bwfc

@ttjck5: Nah fucking class this ahahahah

@lukeredmanwxm: Hate to say it but that’s exactly how I feel 🤣🤣

@J1996_x: Maybe if they weren’t so shit they wouldn’t hear it.

@Layton825658913: Just don’t get battered by Wigan Stockport, and Blackpool everytime you play them and they’ll stop singing it 🤷‍♂️

@WafcHugh: It’s not just there though 😉

@rh0de5: Cheered this shit Monday morning up 👍

@JimSummersNews: Annual ‘Bolton get battered, everywhere they go’ tweet. It’s a wonder we’ve managed to wallop one of Europe’s biggest clubs yet again. 😃⚽️ #stockportcounty
