Is Mevo Gen2 The Next Generation In Personal Launch Monitors?

“Next generation” is one of those phrases that’s on the verge of becoming a cliché. Personally, I blame the Star Trek franchise, but it is what it is.

The new Mevo Gen2 personal launch monitor from Flightscope lets you know in no uncertain terms that this is the next generation. It is, after all, right there in the name.

We don’t know much about the new Flightscope Mevo Gen2 beyond what’s in the press release. However, based on what has been supplied, we are at the very least intrigued by this “next generation.”

The information provided suggests that the new Mevo Gen2 is either a refinement of Flightscope’s Mevo+ at a significantly lower price or an improvement to the standard Mevo at a substantially higher price.

Or it could be an entirely new Mevo option, smack dab in the middle.

Either way, color us intrigued.

Is Mevo Gen2 The Next Generation In Personal Launch Monitors?

Flightscope Mevo Gen2

Flightscope was founded in 1989 by Henri Johnson, an electronics engineer from  South Africa with a background in sonar and radar for the defense industry. Specifically, Johnson developed systems to track projectiles for the military. Eventually, Johnson saw opportunities to apply Doppler radar technology to sports, particularly golf.

Flightscope introduced its first launch monitor in 2000, and Johnson moved his company headquarters to Orlando in 2008.

Flightscope launched its first foray into the consumer market in 2017 with the original Mevo. It was – and still is – a compact Doppler radar-based unit about the size of an iPhone, originally retailing for around $500. The Mevo+ came out three years later. It’s a much more robust unit, measuring 16 essential ball and club parameters, and has become one of the more popular launch monitors for in-home golf simulators. It sold for just under $2,000 at launch.

At an anticipated launch price of $1,299, the new Mevo Gen2 appears to be, as we said, smack dab in the middle.

“We set out to deliver the most powerful personal launch monitor and simulator experience at a price point unmatched in the industry,” said Johnson in a statement. “It’s extremely accurate, packed with features and ready to go right out of the box with no subscription fees or hidden costs.”

What does the Mevo Gen 2 do?

According to Flightscope, the Mevo Gen2 measures 18 ball and club metrics for full swing, chipping and putting. For the math-challenged among us, that’s two more parameters than the Mevo+.

For the record, the Mevo Gen2 records carry distance, roll distance and total distance, ball speed and club speed, smash factor, vertical and horizontal launch angle, spin rate and spin axis, peak height, flight time, lateral landing, attack angle and shot type. It will also measure speed, total distance and ball direction for putting.

Additionally, it comes with no-fee/no-limit access to eight golf courses to play on a simulator: Kiawah Island Ocean Course, Torrey Pines, Kapalua Plantation Course, Sea Island in Georgia, Pelican Hill in California, Chateau Whistler in Canada, Valderrama in Spain and Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania.

Like the Mevo and Mevo+, Mevo Gen2 can be used indoors and outdoors. It uses Flightscope’s patented Fusion Tracking Technology which combines 3D Doppler radar and synchronized image processing using a camera to gather impact and flight data. It also includes Flightscope’s Augmented Reality Tracer which provides a tracer line for your shot in real time with selected data overlays.

Additionally, Mevo Gen2 offers integrated video analysis. Its internal camera can record your swing and provide video overlays on your device. Mevo Gen2 also includes 28 different shot tracer colors, making it easy to compare clubs.

It works with standard golf balls, range balls and RCT (Radar Capture Technology) balls to enhance accuracy, particularly indoors.

How accurate is the Mevo Gen2?

As mentioned, we haven’t seen or used one, but based on our own testing of the original Mevo and the Mevo+, we can at least provide some context when compared to GC4 and Trackman.

MyGolfSpy’s 2024 launch monitor testing showed both the Mevo and Mevo+ to be reasonably accurate in measuring ball speed and carry distance when used indoors. It was in the middle of the pack when it came to measuring spin. Outdoors, it was again reasonably accurate in measuring ball speed but less so when measuring carry distance and spin.

Is the Flightscope Mevo Gen2 an upgrade?

It’s been five years since the Mevo+ was launched, a figurative lifetime in the world of launch monitor technology. That said, the Flightscope Mevo Get2 remains an enigma until we get our hands on one. It could be a nice tweener, hitting the price point between the Mevo and Mevo+, or it could be a new, enhanced and more accurate version of the Mevo+, benefiting from new technology at a lower price.

I know we’re all hoping for the latter, but we’ll have to wait and see.

The new Flightscope Mevo Gen2 personal launch monitor retails for $1,299. It’s available now on www.flightscope.com.
