Following her win for Best Supporting Actress, Urvashi publicly challenged the selection method used by the National Film Awards panel. She questioned Shah Rukh Khan’s victory for Jawan as Best Actor.
Actress Urvashi, who won Best Supporting Actress at the 71st National Film Awards for her performance in “Ullozhukku,” has now publicly questioned the jury’s selection process, particularly in light of Shah Rukh Khan’s win for Best Actor in Jawan. “What were the parameters for picking Shah Rukh Khan as Best Actor? and how did Vijayaraghavan get reduced to a supporting actor?” she asked in an interview with Asianet News. Urvashi did not mince words when she called attention to the ambiguity, implying that the selection procedure was unfair and inconsistent.
She pointedly added, “Kuttettan [Vijayaraghavan] is a veteran. At the very least, why wasn’t he considered for a Special Jury Mention?”

Urvashi also revealed a behind-the-scenes story about “Pookkaalam,” stating that she was first offered the job alongside Vijayaraghavan but turned it down because of the demanding physical requirements, which included doing makeup for more than nine hours every day.
“Even for crores, I couldn’t do it. But Vijayaraghavan endured it all and gave a deeply committed performance,” she said. “How can that be called a supporting role?”

Her displeasure went beyond specific accolades to include the way Malayalam cinema was portrayed. “Why wasn’t the Best Actress award shared this year? What’s the protocol? Is there any standard scale?” she asked.

The renowned actress says that the award shouldn’t be accepted in silence. “This is not pension money. If you’re giving me something, I should feel happy receiving it.” She even urged Minister of State Suresh Gopi to probe why Malayalam cinema was overlooked.
Kerala CM reacts to The Kerala Story win
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan posted a tweet on the last day in response to the contentious and propaganda movie The Kerala Story’s big win. The post read, “By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala’s image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar.”
It further read, “Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision. It is not just Malayalis, but everyone who believes in democracy, must raise their voice in defence of truth and the constitutional values we hold dear.”
