Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Carter-Vickers, Dest, and more

Reigning Scottish Premiership champions Celtic kicked off its title defense with three points on Sunday afternoon in Glasgow.

Cameron Carter-Vickers played the full 90 minutes as Brendan Rodgers’ squad claimed a 1-0 win over St. Mirren. The American defender won five of nine duels, completed 91% of his passes, and made 10 defensive recoveries in the match.

Carter-Vickers has remained one of Rodgers’ leading defensive options this summer and that trend should continue into the bulk of the campaign. The 27-year-old teamed up with Liam Scales in the starting lineup, while fellow American Auston Trusty played the final 25 minutes off of the bench.

Celtic will now prepare for a Matchday 2 trip to Aberdeen on August 10.

In Germany, Julian Green and Johan Gomez both enjoyed league victories.

In the Netherlands, Sergino Dest scored PSV’s winning goal in the Dutch Super Cup victory over Go Ahead Eagles.

In Belgium, Griffin Yow scored his first goal of the season for Westerlo.

In Denmark, Matthew Hoppe scored his first goal in two seasons as Sonderjyske picked up three points at home.

In Mexico, Alex Zendejas assisted once in Club America’s Leagues Cup win.
