MCU’s 91% RT Black Panther Spinoff Becomes Streaming Hit On Disney+

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther spinoff series, Eyes of Wakanda, is a streaming hit. Eyes of Wakanda reviews have been largely positive, with the show receiving a 91% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.

All four Eyes of Wakanda episodes came to Disney+ on August 1. The anthology series, which is produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, follows a group of elite Wakandan warriors who undertake perilous missions in order to reclaim Vibranium artifacts.

As per FlixPatrol, as of August 4, Eyes of Wakanda is the number one streaming show on Disney Plus only a few days after all four episodes debuted. It is also the third-most watched movie or show on Disney+ in the US right now.

What This Means For Eyes of Wakanda

Given the recent theatrical release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, much of the MCU discourse is currently focused on that movie. Even though an animated anthology series inevitably won’t receive as much attention as a live-action theatrical film, Eyes of Wakanda is still making waves on Disney+.

Black Panther‘s more than $1.3 billion and Wakanda Forever‘s $859 million box office results proved the widespread appeal of this corner in the franchise. That high level of interest is now translating into Eyes of Wakanda being a streaming hit, even though it does not revolve around the beloved characters from the movies.

Given the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and shows, they tend to perform well when they debut, and Eyes of Wakanda is no exception. The real test of the show’s staying power will be if it continues to stay in the streaming charts in the coming weeks and months.

Our Take On Eyes Of Wakanda’s Streaming Success

Eyes of Wakanda‘s instant streaming success creates a strong argument for Disney+ to greenlight season 2. As an anthology series that jumps between different points throughout Wakanda’s history, there is infinite creative potential for when future episodes could take place.

While those who enjoy the Black Panther movies are naturally drawn to the series, the stories are also able to stand on their own and do not require having previously seen other MCU movies and shows.

While those who enjoy the Black Panther movies are naturally drawn to the series, the stories are also able to stand on their own and do not require having previously seen other MCU movies and shows. This is another favorable element likely contributing to the streaming success and that bodes well for any future seasons.

The timing of the Disney+ release may not have seemed ideal given The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the DCU’s Superman dominating superhero pop culture right now, but so far, that has not gotten in the way of Eyes of Wakanda being the most-watched show on the streaming platform.
