Nimit, you’ve led AI initiatives that span continents and industries. What project challenged your assumptions the most, and how did you adapt your approach?
One of the most transformative and assumption-challenging projects I led involved deploying AI models across a large fleet of fossil-fueled power plants to improve thermal efficiency. Initially, we believed the main challenge would be in model development, training neural networks on historical sensor data to recommend optimal set points. However, the real complexity emerged from deeply entrenched operating norms, equipment-specific constraints, and the human factors of trust and change management.
These plants had decades of legacy knowledge embedded in their operations, and operators were rightfully skeptical of automated suggestions. To bridge this, we co-developed models with plant engineers, built in thermodynamic constraints, and used explainability tools like SHAP to validate model behavior. This wasn’t just an exercise in data science; it was about learning to speak the language of control room operators while maintaining scientific rigor. We also adapted our deployment to include a human-in-the-loop feedback mechanism, ensuring that recommendations were actionable, explainable, and aligned with safety and compliance standards. This led to a 3–5% improvement in thermal efficiency and savings of tens of millions of dollars, while cutting CO2 emissions equivalent to hundreds of thousands of cars off the road.
Take us back to the moment when one of your AI models first helped reduce CO₂ emissions at a coal power plant. What did that turning point look like, from data to deployment, and what choices did your team make that were critical to making it real, not just theoretical?
One of the most pivotal moments in my AI journey was seeing our heat rate optimization engine deployed live at a large coal-fired power plant, where it led to a 2%+ improvement in efficiency within the first few months. That translated to annual fuel savings of over $4.5 million and a CO₂ emissions reduction of 340,000 tons—equivalent to removing over 60,000 cars from the road.
The journey began with collecting two years of granular operational data from the plant’s Distributed Control System (DCS), which included steam temperatures, valve positions, flue gas readings, and ambient conditions. We trained a multilayered neural network to predict heat rate based on these parameters, followed by an optimization layer to recommend set point adjustments. Importantly, we encoded operational and safety constraints such as max allowable temperatures and oxygen ratios to ensure recommendations were realistic.
Critically, we didn’t stop at building an accurate model. We focused heavily on stakeholder engagement, including running workshops with plant operators to interpret model behavior and ensure that AI recommendations made practical sense. We added an explainability layer using SHAP values to show why the model recommended specific changes. This built trust and led to high adoption, proving that AI in the energy sector could move from theoretical promise to measurable environmental and financial impact.
In your role as a Data Science leader, how do you drive alignment between cross-functional teams, especially when deploying complex AI solutions at scale?
Driving alignment across highly interdisciplinary teams is both an art and a science. In my role as a technical leader, I lead pods that include data scientists, machine learning engineers, domain experts, change management professionals, and client-side stakeholders. The key to alignment lies in structured co-creation.
We begin every major engagement by co-defining the business objective and AI roadmap with client leadership. I then guide the technical team in building transparent models, while working closely with process engineers and frontline operators to validate assumptions. For example, during the deployment of our proprietary AI solution for heavy industrial process optimization, I led the creation of playbooks, risk frameworks, and operating procedures that standardized implementation across 100+ use cases. These assets enabled us to scale globally while retaining consistency and accountability.
Moreover, I serve as faculty for internal leadership trainings within our organization, where I coach consultants on leading complex AI transformations. By institutionalizing knowledge-sharing, fostering a common language between technical and business teams, and emphasizing value delivery over technical novelty, we’ve been able to deploy AI at scale with sustained success.
You’ve worked across continents, industries, and now with generative AI for molecule discovery. What’s a moment when the promise of GenAI suddenly felt tangible to you, something that made you stop and think, “This is going to change everything”?
The first time GenAI truly felt revolutionary to me was when we used it to accelerate R&D for a specialty chemicals manufacturer. Traditionally, discovering a new coating polymer would take several years of lab experimentation. Using foundation models like PolyBERT and Unimol+, our team built a generative molecular discovery engine that could propose novel chemical structures with desired properties within weeks.
We combined GenAI models with literature mining tools that parsed patents and publications to extract relevant molecules, and used transformers to generate entirely new candidates. The AI engine predicted chemical behavior, filtered by toxicity and synthesizability, and ranked them based on potential performance. This cut R&D timelines by 3x and significantly improved the client’s time-to-market.
That moment made me realize GenAI is not just a productivity tool but a new scientific collaborator. It’s enabling organizations to explore the design space of chemistry, materials, and biology in ways previously unimaginable. This shift from AI as an analytic tool to AI as an engine of scientific innovation is what made me stop and think: “This changes everything.”
Can you share a moment when your leadership in AI directly changed a client’s strategic direction? What was at stake?
One instance that stands out occurred during a multi-year transformation with a major industrial operator looking to improve its sustainability footprint. The executive team was initially skeptical about AI’s potential and viewed it as a peripheral tool. Through a series of strategic workshops, we showcased how AI could serve as a core lever to reduce emissions, improve uptime, and optimize energy usage.
I led a team that deployed AI models across their asset base, including predictive maintenance systems and efficiency optimizers. The tangible results—tens of millions in savings and CO₂ reductions equivalent to shuttering multiple small power plants- shifted their mindset entirely. The board eventually approved a $200M+ roadmap to scale AI across the enterprise.
This wasn’t just a shift in tools, but in philosophy. AI moved from a pilot initiative to a board-level priority, embedded in their long-term capital planning and ESG strategy. My role was not just technical delivery but guiding the strategic repositioning of AI from a cost center to a value accelerator.
How do you evaluate whether a use case is genuinely AI-worthy versus a problem better solved through traditional analytics?
The decision to use AI must be grounded in problem complexity, data richness, and the business value at stake. I look for use cases with large solution spaces, nonlinear relationships, and high variance in outcomes, conditions where traditional analytics often fall short.
For instance, optimizing heat rate across dozens of power plants with hundreds of sensors and varying ambient conditions is AI-worthy. It requires neural networks to capture nonlinearities and metaheuristic algorithms to generate optimization recommendations. On the other hand, a simple KPI dashboard or linear trend analysis might be better suited for classic analytics.
I also consider explainability and governance. If a problem demands transparency over complexity—such as regulatory reporting—a simpler approach may be preferable. Ultimately, the goal isn’t to use AI for the sake of AI but to choose the most appropriate tool for the problem, balancing sophistication with sustainability.
What emerging trends in AI are you personally excited about, and how do you foresee them reshaping the industry?
I’m particularly excited about domain-specific foundation models and their implications for scientific discovery and engineering optimization. Tools like MolBART, ChemDFM, and ProteinBERT are showing how AI can generate and validate novel compounds in silico, bringing drug discovery, materials R&D, and advanced manufacturing into a new era.
As a data science leader, this is changing how my teams serve our clients, to bring the best of technology to their disposal. We’re moving from advising on business strategy alone to enabling core R&D transformations. Clients now come to us to build GenAI engines that become intellectual property in themselves. The rise of multi-modal models, capable of reasoning across text, images, graphs, and 3D structures, will make consulting even more data-native and innovation-driven.
Moreover, these trends democratize innovation. With GenAI, smaller firms can now access capabilities once reserved for top-tier labs, and also start to play a pivotal role in operationalizing this capability responsibly and at scale.
Looking back at your decade-long journey, what educational or formative experience most prepared you for leading multi-million-dollar AI initiatives?
One of the most formative experiences was my early work as a Data Analytics Research Assistant on a National Science Foundation-funded project during my graduate studies. It was here that I first learned to blend statistical theory with real-world constraints, building models that had to be both scientifically rigorous and practically implementable.
That academic grounding, combined with my training in Industrial Engineering, gave me a systems-level view, how processes, machines, people, and data interact. At my current role as Principal Data Scientist, I built on that foundation by leading projects across sectors, from mining and energy to pharma and agriculture. Each engagement added a layer of depth, whether it was navigating stakeholder dynamics, embedding risk controls, or translating AI outcomes into boardroom narratives.
This progression from academic rigor to strategic leadership enabled me to confidently lead AI programs exceeding $200M in scope, delivering tangible impact while maintaining a long-term vision.
As a leader in AI and automation, how do you cultivate ethical responsibility within your teams while maintaining speed and innovation?
Ethics and speed aren’t mutually exclusive; they’re complementary when built into the development lifecycle. I prioritize governance early by defining ethical principles for each engagement: fairness, transparency, safety, and sustainability.
We operationalize this through bias detection frameworks, explainability tools like SHAP, and rigorous validation protocols. For instance, any model that interacts with human operators or influences safety-critical systems must undergo scenario-based testing and human-in-the-loop design. I also encourage diverse team composition to counter algorithmic bias and hold regular retrospective reviews where team members can raise ethical concerns without hierarchy.
Speed comes from building repeatable pipelines, not cutting corners. My teams use modular architectures and shared libraries, which reduce development time without compromising quality. We’ve proven that innovation can be both rapid and responsible, and that ethical rigor is a multiplier, not a tradeoff.
If you were to design a moonshot project combining GenAI and sustainability, what would it look like, and what global problem would it aim to solve?
My moonshot project would be an AI-powered “Global Catalyst Engine” designed to discover new molecules for carbon capture, renewable energy storage, and green chemistry. The platform would combine chemistry foundation models like ChemDFM and ProteinBERT with reinforcement learning and high-throughput simulation to navigate chemical space efficiently.
It would integrate molecular graph reasoning, quantum simulations, and lab-in-the-loop experimentation to design novel compounds with high performance and low environmental impact. By shortening R&D cycles from years to months, this system could accelerate the decarbonization of industrial processes in sectors like cement, steel, and petrochemicals.
The vision is not just computational discovery, but a closed-loop innovation engine that continuously improves with experimental feedback. This would democratize access to next-gen materials, address climate change at scale, and position GenAI as a cornerstone of sustainable innovation globally.
