Robin Williams was one of the most beloved actors of his time. While getting his start as a stand-up comedian, he was known for his ability to flex between genres and styles. That is, he was equally iconic, playing the emotional role of John Keating in Dead Poets Society as he was in the comedy Mrs. Doubtfire.
Williams also had some iconic roles as a voice actor. Most notably, he provided his talents for the voice of the Genie in Aladdin. Songs like “Friend Like Me” were even more elevated by their good writing, with Williams’ comedic and electric voice acting imbued into the story.
Williams was once in an odd project with Jennifer Coolidge. While getting her start a couple of decades ago, Coolidge has also gotten more famous in recent years, primarily due to her work on The White Lotus. This year, she was also in the kids’ movie A Minecraft Movie.
Now, Williams’ and Coolidge’s project together is finding new life on streaming.
Robots Is Now A Streaming Hit
Robots is now doing well on streaming. The 2005 computer animated movie takes place in a world filled with anthropomorphic robots. The movie tells the story of a young inventor who goes to work at his dream company, only to discover things are not what they seem. In addition to Williams and Coolidge, the voice cast includes Halle Berry, Paula Abdul, Mel Brooks, and Jim Broadbent.
Robots was a strange movie that got a mixed response when it was released in theaters. The film holds a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 54% Popcornmeter. It made $262.5 million on an estimated $75 million budget.
Years later, Robots has now become a streaming success. On Disney+, Robots is now at no. 7 in the United States today, August 7.
Our Take On Robots’ Streaming Success
AI-based movie plots, such as M3GAN and Companion, are increasingly popular now, which explains some of the renewed robot interest. However, the bots in Robots are highly different from any imaginings of AI now. As such, the reasoning for Robots‘ surge at this exact moment seems a bit bizarre.
Perhaps Coolidge’s influence has enough sway to get people interested in Robots again. The movie is one of the more bizarre animated films of its decade, and it is worth checking out for that reason alone. Robots is a unique window into a different era of animation, that can be appreciated by animated movie fans today.
