Must-Play RPGs on Xbox Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass is constantly getting amazing games that its subscribers can enjoy for free – beyond the initial subscription cost, of course. These games are often extremely varied in their style, genres, and design, but they’re all absolutely worth playing. Naturally, that can make it hard to know exactly what to play, worsened by the fact that scrolling through a list of games often leads to an existential crisis.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the issue of there being too many amazing Game Pass games isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Case in point is the fact that one of the very best RPG trilogies of all time is currently available in its entirety on the service. This trilogy will take players hundreds of hours to beat, potentially more if they want to see absolutely everything, and it is worth putting down whatever you’re playing to see it through.

The Shadowrun Games Are Great Xbox Game Pass RPGs

They’re Some Of The Best Cyberpunk RPGs

If you’re looking for the best RPGs on Game Pass, then look no further than the Shadowrun trilogy. Based on the tabletop RPG of the same name, the Shadowrun games take players through a fantasy-infused Cyberpunk adventure filled with cybernetic elves, guns, magic, and so much more. Its truly captivating world is elevated substantially by each game’s amazing writing, stories, and characters, all of which make it feel like you’re playing an expertly run campaign.

Each game is standalone, with Dragonfall being the best of the three, but they are best enjoyed as a trilogy. However, if you’re looking for a playing order, then I’d recommend playing them in release order: Shadowrun Returns first, then Hong Kong, and finally Dragonfall. Regardless of the order you play them in, I can guarantee you that you’ve not played any RPG like these, as everything from their setting to their gameplay is exceptionally unique.

Nothing Scratches The Same Itch As Shadowrun

It Is A Completely Unique RPG Series

The Shadowrun games are frankly some of the most underrated RPGs ever made. There really isn’t anything, outside of Cyberpunk 2077 perhaps, that offers quite the same compelling cyberpunk experience that these games do. Even then, Cyberpunk 2077 lacks the ambitious world, fantasy elements, and strategic gameplay, all of which are what ultimately makes the Shadowrun trilogy so unique in the first place.

Their tabletop nature and somewhat intricate gameplay systems shouldn’t put off newcomers, however, as each game does a good job of introducing the player and settling them in gently. Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of challenge down the line, especially as the multiple ways you can approach each encounter lead to so many unique outcomes. The Shadowrun trilogy is absolutely worth beating on Xbox Game Pass for anyone, but absolutely for those craving a compelling series of well-written RPGs.
