New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough got a chance to show fans some of his skills on Sunday in the team’s NFL preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. Shough, who was drafted with the 40th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, didn’t make the type of headlines he wanted.
Saints fans were not pleased with the effort and made their feelings known on social media. Before entering the NFL Draft, the 25-year-old quarterback played college football at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville.

Why Were Saints Fans Upset With Tyler Shough?
With less than 10 minutes left in the third quarter, Shough dropped back and threw a pass toward the right side of the field. The quarterback was attempting to convert a third-and-six at the Saints’ 42-yard line.
But Chargers rookie Eric Rogers jumped the route, fell to the ground, but got up as he was untouched. He then dashed into the end zone for a Chargers touchdown, giving Los Angeles a two-touchdown lead at that time. It was not a pretty play for Saints fans as this video displayed the entire play breaking down.

Now, what were those upset Saints fans saying? They had a lot on their minds. One fan headed out on X and let it be known that New Orleans might have drafted the wrong quarterback. “Shough garbage, rattler p**p, could’ve had Shedeur Sanders. Arch [Manning] not coming out til 27. Rest in p*ss @Saints” was this fan’s reaction.
Another fan added some smiley emojis to the comment on X, maybe trying to take some of the sting out of it, or maybe the fan is trolling the Saints’ organization. Another Saints fan said that New Orleans should have gotten Sanders, who ended up being drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.

Here’s more “love” directed toward the Saints’ leadership, again pointing out that the team should have gotten Sanders on board. “Lol, they saw Shedeur sitting there and thought …. Nahhh, Tyler Shough is who we want !!” the fan wrote.

Was Shough’s interception the worst one so far of the NFL preseason? This fan certainly thought so as the person wrote, “Shough threw the nastiest pick 6 of the pre-season”. For another fan, the person didn’t hide disdain for Shough and held his fingers down on the all-caps button. The fan wrote, “LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TYLER SHOUGH HUH??????”
Why Did Saints Fans Want Shedeur Sanders?
One fan simply doubted if Shough was, like, for real as an NFL player. The person wrote, “Tyler Shough is not a real player”. Well, this fan wants Saints executive vice president and general manager Mickey Loomis on Line 1 for a phone call. The fan wrote, “seen enough from Tyler Shough get Mikey Loomis address, we on the way !!”
And another person also put a call out to Sanders’ fans and threw a barb at the Saints, too. The person wrote on X, “I know Shedeur Fans side eyeing the Shough and the Saints right now”. One fan kept it short and sweet on their response, also bringing up the Browns in the comment.

But the Shough online beating did not quit at all. One more fan again brought up Sanders in telling the Saints that they might have made a mistake. The fan wrote, “Still in disbelief that the Saints had a choice between Tyler Shough and Shedeur Sanders. A decision that’ll haunt them for years”.
And one final one for the road, with this fan expressing total frustration, writing, “We picked this stupid f**k Tyler shough over Shedeur”.
Shough came into the game, relieving Saints starter Spencer Rattler. The rookie quarterback finished the game with 165 passing yards for a touchdown and an interception while completing 68.18% of his throws, and his team lost 27-13.
