The last time Jimbo Fisher coached college football, it did not end well. He took over the Texas A&M Aggies in 2018 and finished with a 45-25 record over six seasons. After a 6-4 start in 2023, the program bought out his contract for over $75 million.
Despite the disappointing end in College Station, Fisher recently expressed a desire to return to coaching, and it’s safe to say college football fans aren’t thrilled about the idea.
Jimbo Fisher’s Comments on Returning to Coaching Spark Fan Backlash
Fisher, who was fired by the Aggies and received a $76 million buyout, now works as a college football analyst for the ACC Network.
Although he did not coach in 2024, the former head coach recently appeared on the “Trials to Triumph” podcast, where he shared his interest in possibly returning to college football coaching.
“I would be very interested in still doing it, because I still think I’ve got a lot to give and I would like to get back out there,” Fisher said.
The quote made its way to X, and given how his last coaching stint ended, fans were not pleased with Fisher’s interest in returning to college football.

One fan, likely referencing the $76 million buyout, suggested that the former A&M head coach is looking to steal money from a new program.

Another fan argued that if Fisher couldn’t win at historically strong programs like Florida State and Texas A&M, there’s little reason to believe he can succeed at a new school.

One fan pointed out that Fisher’s chance had passed once Rich Rodriguez took the West Virginia job, and if he wants a new coaching gig, he’ll likely need to look outside the Power Four conferences. “Ships sailed. WVU was the only one. Time to G5 and work up!” they posted to X.

One fan even noted that despite having $76 million in the bank, Fisher still isn’t satisfied, showing that money doesn’t solve every problem. “Goes to show that even with all the money and toys in the world, it can’t buy eternal happiness,” they said.

It’s understandable why fans are hesitant about Fisher returning to coaching, but the reality is, he would likely find another job. While his time with the Aggies ended poorly, he remains a historically successful coach.
Across his stints at Texas A&M and Florida State, Fisher compiled a 128-48 record. He led both programs to eight bowl victories and had six double-digit winning seasons at Florida State.
If a program needs a coach with experience and a proven track record, Fisher would be a logical candidate. Time will tell if he returns to college football, but it’s certainly not out of the question.
