Gianluigi Donnarumma confirmed the news this evening that many of us expected to come: that his time at Paris Saint-Germain has come to an end.

In a statement published on his social media profiles, Donnarumma thanked the fans and his PSG teammates but criticised the decision of Luis Enrique; the Spanish head coach confirming earlier that the decision to move on from the Italian goalkeeper was “100%” his decision.

Therefore, the table has been laid. Donnarumma will be leaving PSG and there are no shortage of suitors for the 26-year-old shot-stopper. Manchester City, Bayern and Galatasaray have emerged amongst the clubs linked to the Italian but there are other possibilities on the horizon for the former Milan man.

PSG stance on Donnarumma

PSG’s position on Donnarumma has become a complicated one. With the player being essentially pushed to the fringes of the Parisian club, he has been forced out. However, his contract with the club expires next summer and therefore it would seem that the French outfit are trying their best to not lose the player on a free transfer.

PSG reportedly value the Italian at around €50 million, a steep sum considering the impending expiry of his contract, albeit one that fairly reflects his importance to the club in recent times. Donnarumma was instrumental in the club’s Champions League success in the 2024-25 season and put in some formidable performances that allowed Enrique’s side to progress all the way.

Although, it is now fair to say that PSG have played their hand and no longer hold the cards in the saga. Interested parties will be keeping an eye on the situation but the Ligue 1 side may now have to cede somewhat on their lofty asking price, or else risk losing him for free in 2026.

So where could Donnarumma end up?

Earlier today, Football Italia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà revealed that Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the goalkeeper and Bayern have also made a brief enquiry. For Guardiola’s club, a lot hinges on the future of their current number-one, Ederson. The Brazilian goalkeeper is in talks with Galatasaray to join the Turkish club, with the latest reports indicating that he has already agreed personal terms and the move is awaiting the two clubs to agree on fee.

If Ederson departs City, the door will be open for Donnarumma and the Premier League giants certainly have the funds to support it.

Meanwhile it is those funds, or an absence of them, that serves as the major blockade for a potential return to Serie A for the Italian. Earlier in the summer, reports claimed that several Serie A clubs were dreaming of a free transfer for Donnarumma in 2026, as his lofty salary and PSG’s high demands effectively price any Italian club out of a move.

Of course, we are all familiar with how the transfer market works and what looks impossible one day can become a certainty the next. If no club can meet PSG’s demands for the player, then his price will be lowered and if clubs fail to bite this summer, the free transfer scenario could once again be unlocked.

For now, it looks like Manchester City are the favourites – with both the interest and the funds to support it. Ederson’s departure means they may choose to sign another number-one, or they could instead rely on new signing James Trafford to do the work in net this season. However, the ever-present Saudi Pro League looms large over many high-profile transfers these days and other top Premier League clubs cannot be completely ruled out either.
