Shubman Gill has been the center of discussion among the Indian cricket fraternity after his team leveled the recent five-match Test series 2-2 in England. Shubman Gill has been in great form this year, dominating the ICC Champions Trophy, IPL, and then the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Given his sizzling form, there have been reports making the rounds that the right-handed batter will be recalled to India’s T20I side, and that too as the deputy of the skipper Suryakumar Yadav for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, starting on September 9 in the UAE.
Amidst the calls for handing over all formats’ captaincy and T20I recall for Gill, Sony Sports Network, the official broadcaster of the Asia Cup, has dropped a massive hint about his future. The build-up to the Asia Cup 2025 has taken a dramatic turn with Gill’s absence from the latest official tournament promo.

Despite his PR team reportedly pushing a strong narrative that Yashasvi Jaiswal would not make the squad and Gill would be named vice-captain, the latest Asia Cup promo shared by the Sony Sports Network across its social media platforms tells a different story.
The promo features India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, pacer spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, but Gill was not there. This unexpected snub has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation about whether the Gujarat Titans’ captain would be picked for the upcoming continental tournament.

With India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement around the corner, fans are now left wondering if Gill’s exclusion from the promo hints at a bigger twist in India’s Asia Cup plans. Gill was instrumental in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph with 188 runs in the UAE.
The Punjab lad then scored over 650 runs for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025, and most recently, he finished as the leading run scorer with over 750 runs in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 in England. In his maiden Test series as India’s captain, Gill did an exceptional job.

Shubman Gill’s rise brings a fresh twist to India’s captaincy future
Meanwhile, the leadership debate in Indian cricket is heating up once again. As reported by the Times of India, those in charge are leaning towards having a single captain across all three formats. However, Suryakumar Yadav has been leading the T20I side well and has also been consistent with the bat, so there is no urgency to replace him.
But Shubman Gill’s growing presence in the leadership group looks inevitable. Gill is already leading the Test team, and he is expected to make a T20I comeback as vice-captain. His performances since the start of the year have been outstanding, and India’s preference for having one leader across formats makes his elevation all the more likely in the coming months.
The Times of India report suggested, “Indian cricket has usually leaned towards captains across formats who can cater to the market forces and bring substantial brand value. That Gill has become a major brand can’t be ignored.”
