Astarion’s Actor Neil Newbon Expresses Interest In Returning

Baldur’s Gate 3 has some of the greatest and memorable characters of any modern RPG. From Shadowheart’s mysterious devotion to Gale’s magical affliction, the characters are layered, believable, and feel as human as they possibly could in a high-fantasy RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons. With Baldur’s Gate 4 on the table (though without Larian Studios), the task of creating characters that live up to BG3‘s is a monumental challenge.

That said, there is always the possibility we could see some returning Baldur’s Gate characters in the series’ fourth entry, much like the third game had. If that is the case, Baldur’s Gate 4 should definitely include one of BG3‘s best characters, and even better, his actor is already on board.

Neil Newbon Wants To Play Astarion Again

The Vampire Was Baldur’s Gate 3’s Breakout Character

In an interview with Luality, Neil Newbon, the voice actor of Astarion, stated that he would love to play the character again but doesn’t have much interest in playing a different but similar character, saying: “I’d love to play Astarion again, but I wouldn’t necessarily enjoy playing an Astarion-like character.” Currently, we do not have a canon ending for Astarion, and the character can meet a wide range of fates in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Despite his award-winning performance as Astarion, Newbon isn’t interested in being typecast for future vampire roles, so we may only see his captivating portrayal of a creature of the night if the character returns for Baldur’s Gate 4. Given Astarion’s popularity, it would be a surprise if he’s totally absent from the next game.

Astarion Has A Lot Of Potential For Baldur’s Gate 4

A Guide, Full Party Member, Or A Fun Cameo

Other than the obvious endings where Astarion dies or leaves the party, he is one of the most explorable characters in the game’s sequel. Though he is often sarcastic and self-interested, he has a lot of character growth in BG3, so seeing him return in a mentor role could be similar to fan-favorite Morrigan in the Dragon Age series. His status as a vampire could make him one of the few options for a recurring character if Baldur’s Gate 4 has a significant time jump.

It’s reasonable, though, to assume Astarion could be a party member again. His story isn’t completely finished in any of his endings, and there’s a lot of room for creative exploration or even a cameo appearance. It will be difficult to follow up a game as good as Baldur’s Gate 3, but if Neil Newbon and Astarion are on board for Baldur’s Gate 4, then fans will likely be watching very closely.
