Netflix seems to have an almost perfect supernatural thriller for horror fans that boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%. Considering how Netflix has some incredible horror shows, the TV series in question may arguably not be the streaming service’s best offering in the genre.
However, as its critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes suggests, it undoubtedly ranks among the best supernatural horror thrillers on Netflix and has the potential to further rise in the ranks if given the opportunity to expand. Most viewers who enjoy watching horror shows would likely rank Mike Flanagan’s Netflix originals above most other TV series of the genre.
Given how brilliantly shows like The Haunting of Hill House and Fall of the House of Usher capture their source material’s terrors, it would be fair to say that most of Flanagan’s creations deserve the top spot. However, another compelling supernatural thriller seems good enough to be appreciated as one of Netflix’s better horror offerings.
Horror Fans Should Check Out Hellbound On Netflix
Hellbound Is Unlike Any Other Thriller Offering On Netflix
Based on the webcomic series Jiok written by Yeon Sang-Ho and illustrated by Choi Kyu-Seok, Hellbound‘s opening installment unfolds in 2022, where mysterious supernatural beings suddenly emerge and condemn humans to hell. When the show first landed on Netflix in November 2021, it was so successful that it surpassed Squid Game to become the world’s most-watched Netflix series.
Although Hellbound never matched Squid Game‘s success and influence, it remained a highly discussed series for quite some time after its premiere. Over the years, many viewers and critics have appreciated how Hellbound‘s initial story setup is enough to draw audiences into its dark, unsettling world.
However, what makes it an exceptional series is its exploration of human fallibility, morality, and the dangers of extreme religious fanaticism. There are story beats where Hellbound adopts some bizarre and borderline over-the-top narrative devices, but what keeps it grounded is its reliance on police procedurals and relatable commentary as drivers of its story.
Hellbound’s Future On Netflix Is Still Up In The Air
Despite Its Success, The Show Has Not Been Renewed For Season 3
Even though Hellbound season 1 was incredibly successful, Netflix took time to announce its second installment. The show’s season 2 was finally confirmed in September 2022, almost ten months after season 1’s release. Even though Hellbound season 2 left viewers with many lingering questions, the show’s future remains uncertain on Netflix.
Did You Know: Hellbound was the first Korean drama series to receive a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Netflix has yet to officially confirm the release of Hellbound season 3. However, given how it has already been ten months since its second season came out, it is hard not to wonder if the streamer plans to continue its run. While only time will tell what the future holds for Netflix‘s Hellbound, the show’s two existing installments are enthralling enough to please most horror fans.
