Developer Team Cherry has finally announced the release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong after seven years of waiting, and it has the chance to do the funniest thing with the game. The sequel to the critically acclaimed metroidvania released in 2017, the new title is also one of the most anticipated games of the year. Now, Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date is set for September 4 this year.
The new game will follow Hornet, a character who appeared as an NPC in the original game. Now, the new protagonist will venture off to a new region and fight new bosses along the way. The gameplay footage for Silksong has shown that, while it will feel like the original Hollow Knight in many ways, there will also be several improvements that make it feel unique as you control Hornet.
Silksong’s DLC Could Become A New Hollow Knight Sequel
Team Cherry Is Working On Post-Launch Content
In addition to the release date announcement, Team Cherry has revealed that it will work on post-release content for the upcoming metroidvania. In an interview with Bloomberg, the studio’s co-founders, Ari Gibson and William Pellen, explain that DLCs may arrive for Hollow Knight: Silksong in the foreseeable future. “What comes after for us is equally as exciting [as the launch],” says Pellen.
Gibson mentions that Team Cherry has a plan for post-launch content and that a bit of it is “ambitious,” but that the company is working on delivering it. The duo didn’t specifically state that the game will get expansions, but given that parts of the plans are “ambitious,” I wouldn’t be totally surprised if Team Cherry discarded the larger DLCs and made a new Hollow Knight sequel after Silksong.
Silksong Was Originally A Hollow Knight DLC Project
The First Game Still Had Four Post-Launch DLCs
After all, Silksong itself was originally a DLC project for the first Hollow Knight game. The team started working on the expansion centered around Hornet, but after seeing the scope of the project grow over time, Team Cherry decided to transform it into a fully-fledged game. What started off as a DLC eventually became one of the most anticipated games of the decade, mainly due to Hollow Knight’s popularity.
If the developers do lose sight of the scope of the DLCs that seem to be planned for Silksong, there is a chance that history will repeat itself, and part of the project ends up becoming a third installment in the series. Of course, even if that were to happen, it wouldn’t mean that Silksong would have no DLCs at all.
The first game in the series did see one of its DLCs put aside to eventually become the sequel, but it did receive four DLC packs, which brought forth new story quests, as well as bosses to fight. This is all compiled in the Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition.
It’s good to know that the new title will get a similar post-launch treatment. However, I’m also hoping that Team Cherry ends up crafting a new game in the series after Hollow Knight: Silksong, even if that means we have to wait another seven years to finally play it.
