Crystal Palace’s English Premier League campaign got underway on Sunday at Stamford Bridge with Chris Richards helping the Eagles to a road point.
Richards played the full 90 minutes in Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw with London rivals Chelsea. The U.S. men’s national team defender was a rock in Oliver Glasner’s backline, completed 90% of his passes, winning all five of his individual duels, and completed both of his tackle attempts.
Richards, 25, has continued to be a key starter for the Eagles after helping them knock off Liverpool in last weekend’s FA Community Shield. Now with Marc Guehi set to depart the club in the coming days, Richards could see an even larger role for the bulk of the current season.
Crystal Palace will now turn its attention to the start of a two-legged playoff series with Fredrikstad on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League.
In England, Tyler Adams started in Bournemouth’s loss to Liverpool. Josh Sargent and Haji Wright both scored in EFL Championship play on Saturday. Lynden Gooch scored in Huddersfield Town’s road loss to Blackpool.
