Australia’s outback holds a mystique all its own, a vast landscape teeming with ancient stories and breathtaking natural wonders.
Our recent adventure into Queensland’s heartland unveiled three truly remarkable destinations, each offering a unique blend of luxury, history, and thrilling discovery.
Mt Mulligan: Glamping Grandeur on a Working Cattle Station
Our journey began in sublime comfort at Mt Mulligan, a proud member of the prestigious Luxury Lodges of Australia. For three unforgettable nights, we traded cityscapes for starry skies, nestled in their exquisite glamping tents. Imagine waking to the gentle sounds of the bush, knowing you’re on a vast, working cattle station spanning 28,000 hectares, steeped in fascinating mining history.
Our days at Mt Mulligan were a perfect balance of exhilaration and pure relaxation. Mornings were for adventure – we explored the expansive property on thrilling ATV tours, discovering hidden corners and incredible vistas. Afternoons brought a welcome respite, with plenty of time to cool off in the inviting pool, cast a line for some fishing, or paddle across the tranquil waters in a kayak.
And the food! With five dedicated chefs looking after our every culinary desire, each meal was an absolute highlight. From gourmet delights, flavourful, and utterly delicious. The best part? It was all-inclusive, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience without a single worry. Mt Mulligan truly redefined “glamping” for us – an unforgettable blend of luxury, adventure, and genuine outback charm.
Undara Lava Tubes: Stepping Back in Time
Our next stop transported us back 190,000 years to the dramatic eruption of a volcano that reshaped the ancient rainforest. Welcome to Undara Lava Tubes Discovery Park, a place where history and geology collide in spectacular fashion. Discovered on a cattle property in 1920, these incredible lava tubes are now a protected natural wonder.
The accommodation at Discovery Park is an experience in itself – you can stay in charmingly restored old train carriages, adding a unique and nostalgic touch to our stay. We stayed in very comfortable cabins. Guided tours allowed us to venture into the lava tubes, marvelling at the colossal formations carved by molten rock. It was an awe-inspiring reminder of the raw power of nature and the incredible stories etched into our planet.
Cobbold Gorge: A Hidden Gem Revealed
Our next destination was the magnificent Cobbold Gorge, a natural marvel that remained largely undiscovered until 1993, making it just over 30 years old to the wider world! Now a Nature Reserve, this stunning gorge offers a truly immersive experience.
One of the most thrilling aspects of Cobbold Gorge is its innovative glass bridge, suspended high above the water, offering breathtaking, transparent views into the depths below. We glided through the narrow gorge on quiet electric boats, and you can even try our hand at paddleboarding, allowing for an incredibly peaceful and intimate encounter with this natural wonder. For those seeking an aerial perspective, helicopter tours are also available, providing sweeping views of the dramatic landscape. With a range of comfortable accommodation and expertly guided tours, Cobbold Gorge is a testament to the ongoing discovery of Australia’s hidden treasures.
Our journey through Mt Mulligan, Undara, and Cobbold Gorge was an unforgettable exploration of Queensland’s diverse and captivating outback.
Each destination offered its own unique magic, leaving us with a profound appreciation for the natural beauty, rich history, and incredible adventures that await in this vast and remarkable country.
