Botslab G980H Pro dash cam review – Cover all the angles

REVIEW – We get offers to review dashcams all the time. Up until now, I’ve passed on them. No real reason, just wasn’t feeling it. Then Botslab offered the G980H Pro, and I was interested. I reviewed one of their robot vacuums and liked it. The bot was good, and so was their app. The G980 H Pro looked pretty cool in that it has four separate cameras, and with all the crazy drivers out there, the more the better. I don’t drive in anything like Atlanta traffic, but Pensacola traffic can be harrowing enough in its own right. So let’s see how well the Botslab dashcam worked out.

What is it?

The Botslab G980H Pro Multi-channel is a dashcam with four separate cameras: 1 3k front camera, 2 1080p sides, and 1 1080p rear, with a 128 GB micro SD card, built-in GPS, and a companion app.

Design and features

The first feature or features of this dashcam are the cameras. There are a total of 4 cameras in the kit. The main camera is a 3K resolution. I don’t know what kind of sensor it uses, the chipset, or the optics, but the video looks good. The front lens itself can be positioned to get just the right view. Next, there are two side cameras, both of which are 1080p and attach via USB-C and are held in place with magnets. This means you can attach 1, both, or none at all, completely up to you. These cameras can be swiveled 90 degrees so you can have them pointed straight into the car or all the way to the sides. Finally, there’s a rear camera that’s also 1080p and connects via a long USB-C cable. It can be rotated up and down, again, to get the view just right for you.

All of these are powered by the 12V cable that plugs into your accessory port or cigarette lighter port, if anyone still calls it that. I don’t think any cars since the early 2000s actually have a cigarette lighter. And if you’re worried about losing that port to charge your phone, the plug has a USB port built in, so you can still have accessibility for that.

This system has a lot of other features that I can’t really show with photos, so I’ll just tell you about them. One is built-in GPS. You can track your drives with Google Maps. Personally, I don’t have much need for that, although I would be able to see where my car had gone if, let’s say, one of my kiddos took it and I wanted to make sure they went where they said they were going. The system also had emergency recordings that activate if your car experiences a bump big enough to trigger the camera. This should come in handy if there’s a fender bender and you need to submit evidence to your insurance company.

The Botslab G980H also has a way to keep the data safe if the car were to experience a sudden loss of power. It contains a supercapacitor and can withstand temperatures from -20 °C to 70 °C, which comes in handy here in the NWFL heat.

The camera also has voice commands, a touchscreen, a parking monitoring mode, night vision for the interior cameras, and even a fatigue warning if you’ve been driving over 2 hours. Pretty cool.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

There is an installation process you have to go through to get the Botslab G980H installed in your car. It mainly consists of hiding the cabling behind the trim of your car’s interior. Botslab even includes a tool for you to use to aid in the process. Any excess cabling can be tucked away into a void behind your main console. In the past, I’ve installed speakers and head units into the cars I’ve owned. I’ve also installed the separate satellite radio players that had the external antenna, so the process wasn’t all that difficult for me.

Botslab also has a companion app that includes the dashcam. It’s the same app I installed way back when I reviewed the robot vacuum. There’s a lot you can do in the app. You can view all the videos, view your GPS info, update firmware, change camera settings, and much, much more.

Performance

The entire Botslab G980H system works great. It’s pretty much a set-and-forget system. Once it’s installed, it just works. You can access the videos through your phone via the app, or you can eject the SD card and plug it into your PC. I wasn’t able to test the sentry or parking modes since my car doesn’t allow for constant power at the 12V port, but everything else worked as advertised. It’s been cool to view some of the videos from my drives. The only nitpick I have is the emergency recording sensitivity. It could be because I need some suspension work, but even after adjusting the settings within the camera, it still seems to be too sensitive to bumps that trigger the camera. The video looks great. The internal audio recording is good.

Final thoughts

I like the experience I’ve had with the Botslab G980H dashcam system. The hardest part of it all was the installation, and even that was easy for me. It offers a lot of features at what I think is a very good price point. If you have kids who are driving, live in an area with lots of traffic, or are an Uber driver who needs to record the goings-on of the crazy riders you get, then check out Botslab. I like the Botslab products I’ve reviewed so far. They’ve both been great, and the app is easy to use as well.
