It Started With A Seamless Arrival in Bordeaux
Our journey began with Thai Airways whisking us away to Paris, followed by a smooth connection on Air France to Bordeaux. Upon arrival, we were met with effortless efficiency, transferred directly from the airport to our awaiting ship, moored elegantly in the heart of downtown Bordeaux. It was a striking first impression: the vessel nestled along the Garonne River, with the city’s historic architecture rising just beyond the quay.
Once onboard, guests could unwind in the plush lounges or take in the gentle rhythm of the river from the open deck. But with the city quite literally at our doorstep, I couldn’t resist the allure of a spontaneous stroll. Within moments, I was immersed in Bordeaux’s charm; cobbled streets, grand facades, and the soft hum of café life welcomed me to explore.
First Impressions: Where Elegance Meets Energy
Bordeaux immediately struck me as a city that wears its history with pride. Strolling from the dock, I was surrounded by 18th-century architecture so beautifully preserved it felt like walking through a living museum. Ornate balconies, grand stone facades, and tree-lined boulevards whispered stories of a bygone era, yet the city pulsed with a modern vibrancy.
The shopping scene was irresistible. From chic boutiques tucked into side streets to the grand promenade of Rue Sainte-Catherine – Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping street – Bordeaux offered everything from high fashion to artisanal treasures. I found myself lingering in elegant storefronts, admiring curated displays that blended French sophistication with local flair.
An Evening of Warm Welcomes
At 6pm, our group gathered onboard for our first dinner, a moment that set the tone for the exceptional service we’d come to enjoy throughout the cruise. The Uniworld crew greeted us not just with menus, but with genuine curiosity and care. They asked our names, engaged in light conversation, and began building the kind of rapport that transforms a voyage into something personal.
Over the next eight days, this attention to detail became a hallmark of our experience. The staff remembered our preferences, from our selection of wines to side dishes and of course my favourite – an “Affagato” – and often had them served before we’d even asked. It was as if they anticipated our needs, creating a rhythm of comfort and familiarity that made each meal feel like dining among friends.
The setting only added to the magic: elegant tableware, soft lighting, and views of Bordeaux’s riverfront as the city began to twinkle under the evening sky. It was the perfect beginning to a journey that promised indulgence, connection, and unforgettable moments.
Cruising Through Time and Terroir
Over the next eight days, the River Royale meandered gracefully through the waterways of southwestern France – the Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde rivers – each offering its own rhythm and charm. As we sailed deeper into the countryside, the scenery unfolded like a series of postcards: rolling vineyards, sleepy villages, and grand châteaux rising from the mist.

Our itinerary was a blend of history and indulgence. From the fortified stronghold of Fort Médoc to the elegant streets of Cadillac, each stop revealed a new layer of the region’s story. In Blaye, we wandered through ancient citadels; in Libourne, we explored bustling markets and riverside cafés. And everywhere, the scent of wine lingered in the air, a reminder that we were cruising through one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.
We strolled through archaeological sites that whispered of Roman legacies, admired landmarks steeped in centuries of tradition, and tasted vintages that spoke of soil, sun, and savoir-faire. It was a journey not just through geography, but through culture, craftsmanship, and connection.
Pedals and Pinot in Pauillac
One of the standout memories from our journey? Definitely our stop in Pauillac. Tucked away in the heart of the Médoc wine region, where the grapes grow as far as the eye can squint. We swapped river cruising for pedal power, hopping on bikes to explore the countryside like a pack of chic Tour de France hopefuls (minus the Lycra). The ride was pure bliss: winding paths, charming stone farmhouses, golden fields, and vineyards that seemed to go on forever. Honestly, it was all très magnifique… except my bike seat, which clearly mistook itself for a medieval torture device. A little extra padding wouldn’t have gone astray!
Cycling through Pauillac was a highlightOur destination was a local vineyard, where time seemed to slow. We were invited to walk through the vines, brushing fingertips against the leaves and soaking in the quiet majesty of the terroir. There’s something grounding about standing among the very grapes that would become Bordeaux’s famed reds, a connection to the earth, the craft and the generations who’ve tended it.
The tasting that followed was intimate and authentic. Surrounded by barrels and the scent of oak, we sampled wines that told the story of the land, bold, elegant, and unmistakably Pauillac.Â
A Sacred Pause in Saint-Émilion
Saint-Émilion held something truly special. This enchanting medieval village, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, traces its roots back to Roman times, with vineyards planted as early as the 2nd century AD. The town itself was named after Émilion, a Breton monk who lived as a hermit in the area during the 8th century, performing miracles and inspiring a spiritual legacy that still lingers in the limestone walls and monolithic church.
For the history buff in me, it was an absolute dream! Like stepping into a time machine, but with better shoes. Narrow cobbled streets led us to tucked-away chapels, crumbling ruins, and sweeping views of vineyards that looked like they’d been painted by someone with a serious love of wine and symmetry. It was a living blend of faith, wine, and tradition… with a few uphill climbs thrown in to keep us humble.
When lunchtime rolled around, we skipped the charming restaurants (though they did wink at us temptingly) and went full French cliché, in the best way. A crusty baguette, creamy local fromage, and a bottle of red tucked into our picnic bag. Très chic, très simple, and très delicious. Honestly, it felt like we were starring in our own countryside rom-com, just with fewer costume changes.
We found a quiet spot within the ancient grounds, shaded by stone arches and serenaded by birdsong. It was one of those moments that needed no embellishment, just good food, good company, and the timeless beauty of Saint-Émilion.

A Journey to Savour
This beautiful river cruise through Bordeaux was more than a holiday, it was a feast for the senses and the soul. It awakened the history buff in me with ancient villages, UNESCO treasures, and stories etched into stone. It satisfied my hunger for exquisite food and wine, from vineyard tastings to simple picnics in sacred places. And above all, it reignited my passion for travel – for discovering new corners of the world, one unforgettable moment at a time.
