Teacher’s Comments: A pleasant enough respite from area resort golf.

In an area packed with high-end resort courses, Centennial Golf Club offers a nice respite with decently priced, basic golf.

Centennial is a farmlands course, mostly open with a few wooded holes on the back of the property. If you have ever driven down a country road and passed a farm with rolling hills and a few stands of woods and thought: “That would make a nice golf course,” you can imagine Centennial.

Most of the holes at Centennial are straight-ish shots from tee to green. The six wooded holes, however, have three strong doglegs, including one with a right angle that has a helpful, although temporarily confusing, target flag in the middle of the fairway at the bend.

The routing at Centennial takes nice advantage of the lightly rolling topography. Nearly every hole has at least a little bit of elevation change. Ultimately, though, the design is just workmanlike.

Centennial is on the short side, clocking in at just 6, 149 from the tips. It is also not a difficult course:

A bogey golfer should be able to score well there.

Centennial Farms 36 of 41 — Sixteen at Centennial is a 316-yard par 4.

My favorite hole at Centennial was the par four sixteenth. The hole begins on a slightly elevated tee, plays downward for the first two thirds, and then bends slightly to the right. A long, treacherous fairway bunker guards the inside right.

The approach is uphill to a green perched on a ledge on a small hill.

I also really liked the par three fourteenth, with its volcano green guarded by two forward bunkers. It reminded me of Washtenaw Golf Club’s wonderful par three fourth.

Conditions on the day I played were decent. The fairways were covered; greens and tee boxes were in good shape. The edges of the holes also were well-maintained. The whole course had a tidy air.

Centennial gets a passing grade for delivering on its modest promises. Better players likely will find it too short and too easy and gravitate toward one of the nearby resort courses. Players looking for a memorable round with nice views also would be happier elsewhere. For others — and especially for seniors, juniors, families and those on a budget — Centennial Golf Club is worth a look if you’re in the area.
