OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities by adding new features that improve both its search and shopping options.
The updates were announced in an April 28 post on X, after the chatbot first gained the ability to search the internet.
One of the main changes is the addition of a shopping tool built into ChatGPT. When a user looks for items, such as electronics or gifts, the chatbot can show a list of products, prices, customer reviews, and direct purchase links. OpenAI noted in its April 28 announcement, “Product results are chosen independently and are not ads”.

OpenAI shared that ChatGPT handled more than one billion search queries last week alone. The company highlighted this number to show how much the chatbot’s search function has grown since its launch in November 2022.
Along with shopping, ChatGPT’s search has received other improvements. Answers include several sources instead of just one. Users can also see exactly which part of the response is linked to each source.
New features, such as autocomplete suggestions, popular search topics, and live answers through WhatsApp using 1-800-ChatGPT, are also being added.
Websites that allow OpenAI’s crawler to access their pages may appear in ChatGPT’s search results. Any clicks coming from ChatGPT will be marked so site owners can recognize traffic from the chatbot.
The company said the updates are being made available to everyone, including Plus, Pro, Free, and even users who are not logged in.
