Maintaining a proper oral care routine is vital for protecting not only your smile but your overall health as well. When it comes to oral health problems, gum inflammation (or periodontal disease) is one of the most common conditions people experience, affecting more than half of adults worldwide. If left untreated, gum inflammation can progress into more serious conditions such as gum recession, tooth loss, and even systemic health issues like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is why it is so important for people who experience gum inflammation to get it checked by a dentist, as early detection allows for simpler treatment, prevents long-term damage, and helps avoid other health issues. However, not everyone has access to a dental care professional, not to mention it can also be costly depending on where you live. Enter Dentomi, a dental health tech company that recently debuted its flagship product, called GumAI, at CES 2026, a highly sensitive, nearly instant screening solution designed to make oral care accessible to everyone.
WHO IS DENTOMI?
Dentomi Limited is a 3-year old pioneering dental healthcare tech startup based in Hong Kong that specializes in developing AI-driven oral healthcare solutions. The company was founded in 2023 by Dr. Reinhard Chau—a PhD Fellow at the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Dentistry specializing in AI technology and Mobile Health (mHealth) applications in dentistry—and by Professor Walter Lam—a tenured Clinical Associate Professor and prosthodontist with fellowships from professional colleges in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Hong Kong.

The company provides a range of sustainable and affordable oral healthcare solutions from disease prevention to personalized dental treatment by using cutting-edge digital technologies and artificial intelligence.
Dentomi recently showcased its flagship product, GumAI, at CES 2026, a Gingivitis screening solution powered by artificial intelligence, which makes oral health monitoring easily accessible for anyone via any internet-connected smartphone. Designed to transform the way people monitor and care for gum health, GumAI detects early signs of gum inflammation nearly instantaneously.
During the preparation for CES 2026, we had the opportunity to interview Dentomi’s Co-Founder and CEO, Dr. Reinhard Chau, who mentioned that “The idea behind GumAI originated after we came across seniors in our city who suffered from mobility issues, meaning they couldn’t just leave their home and go to a dental clinic, which typically isn’t even close to where they live.” Dr. Chau added that “Just like in the US, seeing a dentist in Hong Kong is not exactly the most affordable thing for many people either.”

This is what led Dentomi to develop a reliable solution like GumAI that would allow people to take better care of their oral health and also help prevent different oral health problems, which could potentially result in other health issues if not addressed early on.
Dr. Chau proudly explained that “Dentomi’s vision as a company is to make oral care universally accessible, in particular for vulnerable populations such as elderly people as well as those without access to routine dental checkups”.
Dr. Chau ended by noting that “By using AI technology and everyday mobile devices, GumAI empowers users to detect issues earlier, take proactive steps towards better oral health, and ultimately reduce preventable dental disease and healthcare costs.”
WHAT IS DENTOMI’S GUMAI SOLUTION?
Dentomi’s GumAI is an AI-powered Mobile Health (mHealth) system consisting of a Gingivitis screening solution, which leverages advanced imaging technology and AI algorithms to nearly instantaneously detect early signs of gum inflammation simply by using a smartphone camera.
GumAI guides users through a straightforward process of aligning their mouth with an onscreen overlay. A photo is then captured and highly accurate results are delivered in real-time with an estimated accuracy of approximately 80%, meaning GumAI’s accuracy is on par with visual assessments by dental professionals.
These results are displayed in a color-coded format, with Green representing healthy gum areas, Yellow indicating questionable gum health areas, and Red highlighting areas where gum disease has been detected.

Additionally, the system also provides users with personalized recommendations on how to address detected gum-health issues, and if necessary, clinical referral guidance.
The technology can be easily deployed at home, in community centers, retail environments, pharmacies, or clinical settings.
It’s also worth noting that Dentomi’s GumAI oral screening solution is backed by Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and Google.

WHAT ARE DENTOMI’S FUTURE PLANS FOR GUMAI?
For the time being, Dentomi is doing a pilot run of GumAI’s use in their local area of Hong Kong. Once that’s finished, the company is planning on properly distributing its oral health screening solution in a wider area within Hong Kong, which is scheduled to take place next year.
According to Dentomi ‘s Co-Founder and CEO, Dr. Reinhard Chau, the company is also close to deploying GumAI in Taiwan.
In addition, Dentomi is also in discussion with a few potential partners, with the aim of launching GumAI in Asia and Europe.
The company is also looking for a potential partner that enables it to make GumAI available across the US.
Dentomi’s GumAI technology was developed as a B2B product. To be able to launch its product in different countries, Dentomi is looking to establish partnerships with oral care companies such as Colgate, as well as with selected non-governmental organizations.
