And with that, I’ll call it quits. Here’s Ali Martin’s report.
Some final thoughts: there’ll be critics of how England went today but Brook and Stokes got fine deliveries and Smith only erred after getting to 88. Maybe he didn’t need to keep swinging but you can’t have a pop at the guy who scored 272 runs in the match. Ultimately, the focus has to be on everything that came before. India’s bowlers, led by Deep and Siraj, caused havoc with the new ball. It’ll be a surprise if England don’t do a serious re-jig of their own attack next week.
Shubman Gill gets the medal and bottle – he’s had a wonderful week, an obscene amount of runs to go with his first Test win as India captain. “I’m definitely feeling comfortable with my game,” he says. Yeah, I reckon so, Shubman. He confirms that Bumrah will be back for Lord’s. The series is perfectly set up.

As they say on reddit, am I the arsehole?
I can’t watch this England performance and see it as anything other than taking the piss. They only needed to bat 80 overs today and have barely got halfway. They’re now laughing and applauding their no 11 throwing the bat around.
It’s the equivalent of finding an exam too hard and filling in the answers with jokes, isn’t it?
Batting 80 overs on the final day is never simple. England should probably be more concerned with how they went on the days before, allowing a side to pile up more than a thousand runs. I wouldn’t be so harsh on them taking some joy out of the final rites.
Gill will probably get Player of the Match but Akash Deep has final figures of 10 for 187, a phenomenal effort after replacing the great Jasprit Bumrah. This is India first Test victory at Edgbaston.
India win the second Test by 336 runs!
Deep has 10 in the match, India have their victory. Carse slogs again but the ball flies high into the Birmingham sky, with Shubman Gill (who else?) holding on. It’s 1-1 and we’ve got a series.
68th over: England 271-9 (Carse 38, Bashir 12) “Ai yaar,” come the shout from Pant, exasperated after Jadeja turns one wildly but misses the stumps. He’s back to the over-the-wicket ploy as Bashir fails to make contact with an extravagant swish.
67th over: England 271-9 (Carse 38, Bashir 12) Brydon Carse’s right hand comes off the bat but he’s got enough muscle to pull Deep away for four. He continues to slog, a thick edge flying over the slips for another boundary.
66th over: England 262-9 (Carse 30, Bashir 12) India think they have their victory after Bashir tries to scoop Jadeja, the ball lobbing up for a catch. But there was no bat or glove on it, just the pad.
65th over: England 259-9 (Carse 29, Bashir 10) Akash Deep is back, victory and a 10-for in his sights. Carse wants to make room for a swing but Deep follows him with a bumper. Carse slogs a fuller ball high into the air … and Siraj, back-pedalling at mid-on, can’t hold on. Bashir then pumps over long-on for six, taking his strike rate to 500.
64th over: England 250-9 (Carse 26, Bashir 4) Shoaib Bashir begins with a reverse-sweep for four. Wild.
WICKET! Tongue c Siraj b Jadeja 2 (England 246-9)
Jadeja has had a glance at the OBO between overs and decides to go around the wicket … and he strikes! Tongue tries to whip one away and finds the leaping Siraj at midwicket – it’s a one-handed ripper diving low to his right.
63rd over: England 245-8 (Carse 25, Tongue 2) Siraj loses his footing and pulls out of the delivery. A full toss follows, his rhythm slightly lost.
62nd over: England 244-8 (Carse 24, Tongue 2) Jadeja is getting some outrageous turn from over the wicket but does he need it? He surely backs himself to get a tailender out from around with less assistance, bringing leg-before into the equation.
61st over: England 242-8 (Carse 24, Tongue 0) Siraj returns and Carse flings a drive through the offside for four before the dots pile up.
60th over: England 238-8 (Carse 20, Tongue 0) Jadeja is ripping them hard, past the edge, into the pads. Tongue somehow hangs in there.
59th over: England 238-8 (Carse 20, Tongue 0) With Bumrah surely back for Lord’s, who takes the new ball for India? Deep and Siraj have combined for 16 wickets in this match. Krishna, the man you’d expect to make way for the premier quick, is swung away over deep midwicket for six by Carse.
58th over: England 232-8 (Carse 14, Tongue 0) Jadeja returns and is swept away by Carse for four … and then a drop! The ball spits off the pitch and takes the outside edge but Rahul can’t hold on at slip after diving to his left.
57th over: England 227-8 (Carse 9, Tongue 0) Krishna goes full to Tongue and there’s an lbw shout … but an inside-edge saves the tailender. A ball sneaks past the outside edge before Krishna tries to strike with the yorker.
56th over: England 226-8 (Carse 8, Tongue 0) Smith’s brilliant effort is over and India should have their victory soon. Deep is one away from 10 in the match.
WICKET! Smith c Washington b Deep 88 (England 226-8)
Deep continues for India and Carse punches down the ground for three. The quick goes short to Smith … who hooks for six! And then another wallop, standing tall and pulling into the stands. But it’s third time lucky for Deep! He bowls an off-cutter to flummox Smith, who pulls again but to the man on the leg-side rope. Deep has his maiden Test five-for!
55th over: England 211-7 (Smith 76, Carse 5) Smith begins the over by taking a single … curious. Maybe he’s right to trust Carse, who gets off a pair with a punch behind point for four. They take a single with the penultimate delivery. Smith then makes room for a swat through the off-side … but it’s a wonderful slower-ball yorker from Krishna, with Smith just about getting his bat down in time. Time for drinks.
54th over: England 204-7 (Smith 75, Carse 0) Carse gets the bouncer treatment from Deep but the pitched-up delivery is coming … it’s swinging away and Carse gets the bat down in time.
53rd over: England 204-7 (Smith 75, Carse 0) Brydon Carse is a very accomplished No 9 but it’s time for Smith to properly hog the strike. But he’s given out lbw after missing a pull! It looked very high, with Smith reviewing immediately … the projection shows the ball missing by some distance. Smith flicks a full toss away to the boundary but can he nab a single with the final ball? Krishna sends in a bouncer to produce a dot.
WICKET! Woakes c Siraj b Krishna 7 (England 199-7)
The bouncer does it. Krishna goes short to Woakes, who looks uncomfortable as he pulls. The edge balloons high into the air before finding the mitts of Mohammed Siraj.
52nd over: England 199-6 (Smith 71, Woakes 7) Deep drops short to Woakes and then comes the fuller one, with three men waiting in the cordon … it sneaks past the outside edge.
51st over: England 197-6 (Smith 70, Woakes 6) Prasidh Krishna has the ball. The lights are on at Edgbaston – it doesn’t look all that pretty over there. Smith laces a drive through the off side for one. He has 254 runs in the match – Andy Flower is the only keeper-bat to have made more in a men’s Test.
50th over: England 196-6 (Smith 69, Woakes 6) Smith pulls Deep for one – the ball stayed a touch low but he got enough meat on it. Deep responds with a delivery that jags away from Woakes and whispers past the outside edge. Woakes flings the bat at the next one and gets away with it, the ball just about evading the man in the cordon to go for four.
49th over: England 191-6 (Smith 68, Woakes 2) Smith has an intense game face, but he wants this to be fun. He wallops Washington over deep midwicket for six, cuts for four and goes straight for another six! Just another 418 to win, Jamie.
48th over: England 174-6 (Smith 51, Woakes 2) Akash Deep, having a lovely old time, has the Dukes. Smith digs out a fuller delivery to point for a single and Woakes is greeted with a short ball. Mid-on and mid-off are short for Woakes, who resists.
Jamie Smith reaches his half-century
47th over: England 173-6 (Smith 50, Woakes 2) Washington bowls a straight line to Smith, trying to bring short leg and silly mid-on some action. Smith scampers to the other end and raises his bat for a half-century. He is a special cricketer.
46th over: England 172-6 (Smith 49, Woakes 2) Jadeja gets the ball to explode out of the rough, inviting Smith to play: an outside edge escapes the fielders and runs to the boundary, but it’s India who’ll be pleased.
45th over: England 167-6 (Smith 44, Woakes 2) Pant is uncomfortable with the idea of silence behind the stumps. Washington keeps the line tight outside Woakes’ off stump to produce a maiden.
44th over: England 167-6 (Smith 44, Woakes 2) Jadeja is really wide on the crease as he releases from over the wicket, and he sprints through his eighth over.
43rd over: England 166-6 (Smith 44, Woakes 1) Smith nabs two off Washington and closes the over with another boundary, rocking back to carve behind point. There are runs to be had with all those close fielders in the game.
42nd over: England 158-6 (Smith 37, Woakes 0) Jadeja twirls in from over the wicket and Jamie Smith drives through extra cover for four. A flick for one follows, giving Woakes three deliveries to survive. The No 8 produces a solid straight bat.
