NBA trade candidates for all 30 teams

For the most part, this is pure speculation. But hey, that’s what the NBA offseason is for. It’s a look at who is where and who might not be by the time the real thing begins in late October. Or by the trade deadline in February.

Let’s jump right in with a team-by-team look at NBA trade candidates, some generated by Yours Truly and some via actual intel:

Atlanta Hawks

We’re not going to go as far as saying Trae Young, despite the fact it seems he won’t be getting an extension anytime soon. We won’t say the Hawks will trade Zaccharie Risacher, either. But he’s the player who one scout says, “Could get them a really nice veteran for a playoff push, if that’s what they want.”

Boston Celtics

Anfernee Simons, without a doubt. Acquired as part of the deal with the Trail Blazers centered on Jrue Holiday, Simons could be dealt again by the time you read this. He could stick, too. There are worse young players to have around in the absence of Jayson Tatum.

Brooklyn Nets

If Cam Thomas doesn’t get a new deal and plays the season on an expiring contract, he’s as good as gone. If Thomas does get a new deal, he very well may remain the most likely Net on his way out.

Charlotte Hornets

The development of rookie Kon Knueppel will determine a lot, but if he comes along quickly, the Hornets very well could move on from Collin Sexton by the trade deadline. Sexton, after all, is the ultimate backcourt-scorer-for-hire, a bucket-getter who could help a contender off the bench.

Chicago Bulls

Nikola Vucevic was the main name to watch all of last season and all of this summer. That won’t change until he’s finally traded. Most around the league feel as if this will be the year. Also, one scout swears we will want to keep an eye on Coby White.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavs don’t necessarily want to trade Dean Wade, but outside interest is there. Cleveland also still needs to shed salary. Last year, everyone thought the Cavs might trade Caris LeVert. Everyone was right. Wade is this year’s LeVert.

Dallas Mavericks

Let’s just say the Mavericks won’t be stunning the universe like they did in February. At least, we don’t think. Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg are all likely to stick around. That makes Daniel Gafford or P.J. Washington the candidates by default.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets spent the offseason reshaping the roster around Nikola Jokic and already sent out the man who was their biggest trade candidate. That would be Michael Porter Jr. (for Cameron Johnson). That probably leaves Julian Strawther or Peyton Watson as top smaller-scale candidates.

Detroit Pistons

It’s doubtful the Pistons would do this, because they love Tobias Harris. But anyone could be moved in the right package. An older veteran such as Harris, on an otherwise young team, could be the guy on the go if Detroit starts exploring.

Golden State Warriors

Unsigned restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, without a doubt, stands a chance to be on the move before training camp even begins. Sing-and-trades are tough in the new CBA, but the Warriors clearly have had talks. He could also return to the Warriors, then be dealt during the season.

Houston Rockets

After acquiring Kevin Durant and sending Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks to the Suns, the Rockets will likely wait and see how things go as is. Tari Eason is the one guy other teams regularly asked about this summer.

Indiana Pacers

It’s a new day in Indiana without Tyrese Haliburton (injured) and Myles Turner (with the Bucks). So it’s hard to envision the Pacers unloading any remaining members of their core. But depending on how things go, Obi Toppin and Bennedict Mathurin could be names to watch.

Los Angeles Clippers

Bogdan Bogdanovic is the perfect shooter-for-hire type, and with Bradley Beal now in the mix, it’s hard to know how much Bogdanovic will play. He likely would be the first on the move if the Clippers feel the need to deal.

Los Angeles Lakers

Despite all the buzz, LeBron James is likely in LA to stay (for this season). He does, after all, have a no-trade clause. So when it comes to trade candidates, things will stay the same for the Lakers: Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies already made a few medium-sized moves by acquiring Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (from the Magic) and signing Ty Jerome. KCP is the ultimate journeyman, a guy you love having and other teams want. That makes him the top trade candidate practically anywhere he goes.

Miami Heat

Without a doubt, the main man to watch for the Heat is Andrew Wiggins. He was involved in a few trade talks over the summer, and given that Miami again looks like a middle-of-the-pack team, Wiggins’ name will likely continue to be mentioned.

Milwaukee Bucks

Well, they’re not trading Giannis Antetokounmpo. Let’s just get that out of the way. What the Bucks really need is help in the backcourt. They may have to deal Kyle Kuzma to get some.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves are coming off back-to-back trips to the West finals. They’re probably set. But if they decide to do something semi-splashy, Donte DiVincenzo would probably be the player they’d most be willing to move.

New Orleans Pelicans

Last year, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum were the two Pelicans most mentioned in trade rumors. Both are gone. New Orleans has no desire to move Herb Jones or Trey Murphy III. That could change by February.

New York Knicks

For the Knicks, Miles McBride is a good player who sometimes can be the odd man out in a minutes crunch. That probably won’t improve after Jordan Clarkson signed on. That makes McBride the name to watch here.

Oklahoma City Thunder

It’s hard to envision the reigning champs doing a single thing. They’re set for the now (loads of talent) and the future (loads of draft picks). But this list requires us to pick someone, so we’re gonna go with Isaiah Joe. Nothing personal, buddy.

Orlando Magic

The Magic have lots of size. They may still need more outside shooting, even after acquiring Desmond Bane. If that’s the case, Jonathan Isaac should probably feel a little nervous.

Philadelphia 76ers

Oh boy. There’s no easy pick here. If the Sixers had their druthers, it just might be Paul George. That’s not happening. So let’s go with Quentin Grimes, a fine young player who remains a restricted free agent. And a player other teams would really want.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns did a nice job of unloading Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, because they weren’t going anywhere with either. They will likely explore moving on from Grayson Allen or Nick Richards next.

Portland Trail Blazers

I could see the Trail Blazers being willing to move on from Scoot Henderson if he doesn’t take another step this season. But I doubt that will happen. Henderson should rise with Jrue Holiday in town. That leaves Robert Williams III.

Sacramento Kings

Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan are pretty much talented trade chips wherever they go. That remains the same with the Kings. But it’s Malik Monk who’s been in most of the offseason rumors, and that will likely last all the way until February.

San Antonio Spurs

Wait. Kelly Olynyk hasn’t been traded for the 100th time yet? Yeah, it’s definitely Olynyk then. But Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan could be other names to monitor, depending on how the rotation shakes out and the minutes are divided.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors have some really good forward/wing-types in Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett and Gradey Dick. One will probably need to go at some point. We pick Barrett.

Utah Jazz

Georges Niang has been traded three times since February (Cleveland to Atlanta, Atlanta to Boston, Boston to Utah). We suspect the Jazz will keep the streak alive before the trade deadline.

Washington Wizards

You could pretty much trade anyone on the team and be OK with it, though the Wizards probably want to stick with the likes of Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly. That leaves Khris Middleton, CJ McCollum, and Corey Kispert.
