Peru is a land that stirs the soul – a country where ancient civilisations whisper from mountaintop ruins, where dense jungles echo with birdcalls, and where vibrant cities blend history with modern flair.
My recent journey through this breathtaking country took me from the steamy depths of the Amazon to the heights of Lake Titicaca, with every step offering a new adventure.
Lima – A Flavourful First Impression
I began my trip in Lima, Peru’s coastal capital. Often overlooked as just a gateway, Lima quickly won me over. The colonial charm of the historic centre, the buzzing energy of Miraflores, and the bohemian spirit of Barranco make for a fascinating mix. And the food… oh, the food! Lima is a gastronomic capital of the world. From fresh ceviche by the sea to elegant dining in world-renowned restaurants, this city is a paradise for food lovers. Don’t miss a sunset stroll along the Malecón – the clifftop views over the Pacific are truly unforgettable.
Into the Amazon – Nature at its Wildest
From city lights to jungle nights, my next stop was the Amazon Rainforest. A short flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado took me deep into one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. Staying in an eco-lodge surrounded by nature, I woke each day to the sound of howler monkeys and exotic birds. Guided jungle walks revealed everything from vibrant macaws to an elusive jaguar. River excursions brought us close to caimans, capybaras and even pink river dolphins. The Amazon is humbling – a place where nature takes centre stage and the pace of life slows to something beautifully simple.
Cusco – The Heart of the Inca Empire
Sacred Valley – Inka site at Ollantaytambo
Next, I flew to Cusco – once the capital of the Inca Empire and now a vibrant blend of ancient and colonial. Nestled high in the Andes, Cusco is steeped in history. Every cobblestone street seems to tell a story. I spent my days exploring Inca ruins like Sacsayhuamán, wandering the colourful San Pedro Market, and sipping coca tea in cosy cafés. It’s the perfect base for discovering the Sacred Valley and preparing for the crown jewel of any Peruvian adventure, believe me, you will want to extend your stay here!!
Machu Picchu – The Lost City of the Incas
Marvelling at Machu Picchu
No visit to Peru is complete without standing in awe before Machu Picchu. Whether you arrive by train or trek the Inca Trail, the moment you catch your first glimpse of the citadel through the morning mist is unforgettable. My first sight of this magical place was as the rain moved on and the clouds shifted to reveal the mysterious Machu Picchu!
Perched high in the Andes, surrounded by dramatic peaks and jungle-covered slopes, Machu Picchu is both a marvel of engineering and a deeply spiritual place. Exploring its terraces, temples and hidden corners, you feel the weight of history – and the magic – all around you. It’s a place that truly lives up to the hype.
Lake Titicaca – Where Earth Meets Sky
For the final chapter of my Peruvian journey, I travelled to Lake Titicaca – the highest navigable lake in the world. The vast, glittering waters set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks felt almost otherworldly. I visited the Uros floating islands, made entirely from reeds, and met local families keeping centuries-old traditions alive. A night on Amantani Island, staying with a local host family, was a highlight. Simple, genuine and incredibly heartwarming. As the stars emerged above the lake, I realised this was one of those moments I’d remember forever.
