Alexander Zverev’s girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla, recently shared her experience of being caught in severe weather at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, where heavy rain interrupted the former World No. 2’s match during the 2025 Cincinnati Open. Zverev and Thomalla have been together for five years, having started dating in 2020.
On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, unpleasant weather, including heavy rain, thunder, and lightning, led to the suspension of several matches at the Cincinnati Open.
Alexander Zverev’s Girlfriend Sophia Thomalla Gets Stuck at Cincinnati Open Due to Excessive Rain
Zverev, seeded third at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, commenced his campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. He secured a victory against Nishesh Basavareddy with a score of 6-3, 6-3 in his opening match.
In the third round, the former World No. 2 faced 27th seed Brandon Nakashima and was leading 6-4, 5-4 when play was halted at 9:03 p.m. due to lightning. Heavy rain followed shortly, prompting officials to cancel all remaining matches for the night.
Due to the rain, there will be no further play this evening. A revised order of play for Wednesday will be released shortly.

Zverev is just one point away from securing his victory against Nakashima. The match will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025, and the German will attempt to serve out the win. If he succeeds, he will compete in his fourth-round match later that same day.
So, they’re making Zverev play 2 matches but not Shelton, which seems fair considering that Zverev is a good service game away from victory

Reacting to the unexpected suspension of matches due to the weather, Zverev’s girlfriend, Thomalla, who attended his match in person for the first time in a while, took to social media to share a video of her being stuck at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, showcasing the torrential rain and lightning outside.
“,” Thomalla captioned her Instagram story.

Following the conclusion of his campaign at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, Zverev is set to compete at the US Open. In 2024, he defeated the likes of Maximilian Marterer, Alexandre Müller, Tomás Martín Etcheverry, and Nakashima before being eliminated by eventual runner-up Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals.

Who Will Alexander Zverev Face Next at Cincinnati Open if He Advances?
Should Zverev secure victory over Nakashima in the third round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open, a prospect that appears to be more than likely as the German is just a point away from clinching the match, he will advance to face the 14th seed, Karen Khachanov, in the fourth round.
Khachanov began his campaign at this ATP Masters 1000 hard court tournament in Ohio in the second round, having received a first-round bye. He triumphed over qualifier Valentin Royer in his opening match, winning with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(6). The Russian then progressed to the fourth round after defeating wild card Jenson Brooksby with a 6-3, 6-3 score in the third round.
Zverev and Khachanov have faced each other eight times on the ATP Tour, with the German winning five of those encounters. Their most recent clash took place in the semifinals of the 2025 Canadian Open, where Khachanov emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4). He then finished as the runner-up after falling to Ben Shelton in the final.
The winner of the potential fourth-round match between Zverev and Khachanov at the 2025 Cincinnati Open will advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face either the 22nd seed Jiří Lehečka, the fifth seed Shelton, or Roberto Bautista Agut.
