Jessica Pegula, Paula Badosa, and Other Players Send Messages to Caroline Garcia as She Retires From Tennis at US Open

Caroline Garcia’s racquet hit the ground for the final time Tuesday night, marking the end of a journey that took her from promising junior to World No. 4.

The tears in her eyes after losing to Kamilla Rakhimova weren’t just from defeat. They were from knowing this three-set encounter would be her last as a professional tennis player.

What Did Caroline Garcia Achieve During Her Tennis Career?

Garcia’s professional legacy spans 11 WTA Tour titles, with her crowning achievement coming in 2022 when she captured the prestigious WTA Tour Finals. That same year was her career-defining season, as she also reached the semifinals of the US Open, her best Grand Slam result.

The Frenchwoman’s departure from professional tennis has sparked an outpouring of support from across the tennis community. Fellow players have praised Garcia’s on-court accomplishments as well as her character and friendship off the court.

How Has the Tennis World Said Goodbye to Caroline Garcia?

Tributes have started pouring in for Garcia, who is retiring from the sport after having played only a handful of tournaments in 2025.

Belinda Bencic, who is making a return to the tour after becoming a mother, said that Garcia would be “another one” she would miss a lot. “Time to enjoy life to the fullest now,” she added.

“Wishing you nothing but the best,” wrote last year’s US Open finalist Jessica Pegula.

Paula Badosa, who is recovering from injuries, made an emotional appeal. “Don’t leave us,” the Spaniard wrote. “Your energy will be very missed.” She continued with praise for Garcia’s character: “Congratulations on an amazing career! Great player but better person! Wish you nothing but the best.”

Polish tennis star Magda Linette also wrote a heartfelt tribute for the Frenchwoman on her retirement. “Thank you for being such a light on court and beyond,” Linette posted on her Instagram stories. “It’s been a privilege to share moments with you.” She added, “May life surprise you with more than you ever dreamed of.”

US tennis star Danielle Collins highlighted both Garcia’s professional achievements and personal qualities. “Congratulations on a incredible career,” Collins wrote. “Your achievements throughout your entire career is something so special. Who you are as a person and as a friend is even more special.”

Tennis veteran Sorana Cirstea wrote, “Congrats Caroline Garcia for a wonderful career and thank you for all the great memories. I hope you will enjoy life to the fullest now.”

Former World No. 2 Ons Jabeur also expressed her support, writing: “Wishing you all the best for the future.”

Why Did Caroline Garcia Decide to Retire at 31?

Garcia, who turns 32 in October, has explained that while some may view her as still young, she has already lived a long career filled with highs and lows.

“Some people don’t understand and they say, ‘Oh, but you are young,’ and everything, but I’ve been there for a long time,” Garcia told tennis.com earlier this year. “I got ups and downs, I’ve been through tough moments, both level-wise and result-wise, and also how I was as a person and how much I suffered.”

The former World No. 4 admitted she no longer has the strength or motivation to climb back to the top. “I don’t want to just play tennis just to play tennis. I’ve been at the top and what it takes to be at the top again, I don’t have the strength, and I don’t know if it’s motivation, but it’s just like, I cannot do it anymore. And that’s fine.”

Rather than dwelling on what’s ending, Garcia said she’s ready to embrace what comes next. “At one moment, you have to take another way and open another chapter of your life. Hopefully, this new chapter is bringing me way more joy and light in my life.”
