Iga Świątek ‘Just Shocked’ by Serena Williams’ Gesture for Maria Sharapova After Very ‘Tense’ Relationship

What often begins as the fiercest rivalry on court, marked by tension and friction, can later evolve into remarkable camaraderie. And when the players involved are legends, the transformation becomes even more compelling. Once defined by their rivalry, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova gradually appeared to share a different dynamic as the years passed.

The Russian recently earned one of the sport’s highest honors with her induction into the International Hall of Fame. To the surprise and delight of many, including the current world No. 2, Iga Świątek, Williams took the stage to introduce her longtime rival, delivering a stirring tribute.

What Did Iga Świątek Have To Say About Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova’s Hall of Fame Moment?

Only a few rivalries in tennis were as powerful as those between Williams and Sharapova. Together, they collected 28 Grand Slam titles, and in their 22 showdowns, Williams dominated, winning 20.

Beyond their battles on court, several off-court moments also drew widespread attention. Tensions ran high, most notably in 2013, when Williams appeared to take a veiled dig at Sharapova and her then-boyfriend, Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov, prompting a sharp retort from the Russian.

Moreover, in her 2017 memoir “Unstoppable: My Life So Far,” Sharapova made it clear that she and Williams were not friends, further proving the tensions that lingered during their careers. Over time, however, both appeared to shift their perspectives, with Sharapova even remarking that the media had exaggerated the hostility between them.

That evolution reached a defining moment on August 23, when Sharapova was inducted into the International Hall of Fame. Williams introduced her former rival with a powerful speech in Newport, Rhode Island, to mark the occasion.

Given their history, the moment took many by surprise, including Swiatek, currently competing at the 2025 US Open. At her press conference, she noted that their past tensions made the renewed bond unexpected, yet she welcomed it as a positive development.

“Honestly it’s great. It’s a shame obviously that it didn’t happen before when they were on tour together. I just thought their relationship was so tense that I’m just shocked that they managed to work through it,” she said.

Świątek’s remarks reveal her genuine perspective on the renewed bond between Williams and Sharapova. Though she initially viewed their relationship as tense, the Hall of Fame induction offered her a clearer picture.

Iga Świątek Was ‘Happy To See’ Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova Reconcile

But Świątek wasn’t done expressing her sentiments. She later highlighted the value of goodwill in overcoming conflicts, expressing happiness at Williams and Sharapova’s reconciliation.

“I guess if you have good intentions, you can work through everything, you know. So for sure l’m happy to see that, I think having that appreciation from your biggest rival, I think it must be a great feeling. So Maria also deserves that, and Serena..she’s great. So they’re both great,” she said.

Świątek further expressed joy at seeing Williams and Sharapova reconciled. She emphasized that, despite competition, tennis players should remain united, and their renewed camaraderie serves as a positive example of sportsmanship.

“I was just happy to see them kind of together, because tennis, I mean, I feel like we all should be kind of united and going towards one goal as players, even though we’re competing against each other, and that’s one of the examples of that,” she added.

Beyond commenting on Williams and Sharapova’s relationship, Świątek remains focused on her US Open campaign. The Pole began strongly, defeating Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2, and will next take on Suzan Lamens.
